Why Para 2 costs less than Para 1

Hi All,

I'm wondering why the Paramilitary 2 (S30V, G10) costs $108 street and the Paramilitary (S30V, G10) costs $138 street price.

Any thoughts on this?

The Para 2 has a thinner blade, but has a bushing pivot which I would think is more expensive (need better machinery) to manufacture. Also the Para 2 seems to have full length liners instead of the 3/4 length liners in the Para1.

I'd like to understand the price differential. I *LOVE* my D2 paramilitary, but the Para 2 seems to address the only minor gripes I have with the original: It rides too high when clipped in waistband, the grip is about 1/4 of a finger width too short for me and being a thick blade, is less of a slicer than I would like.

Thanks,
ThumperACC

Sal has mentioned that they're experimenting with lower profit margins on some knives, seeing if the increase in sales will compensate for them. Know the 154CM/G-10 Manix 2 is one of them, I suspect that's the case with the Para 2 is as well.

It really is a tremendous bargain and one of my top three Spydies.

I find the Para slices exceptionally well. Yes, the blade is thicker, but the trade off is that any lateral force (think of your hand slipping a bit) will not result in a broken blade. I have a great appreciation for this knife design.

I agree with the statement that Sal is awesome

Not to get po-lit-ee-col, but I would think that with Spyderco being awesome and slightly lowering prices and companies with butterflies in their logo enforcing a MAAP, Spyderco's should be flying out the door and into our hands :D

I must say, the strategy is a good one. When I first heard of the new Pmil2, I didnt even concern myself with it because I assumed it'd be the same price as the older Pmil and I usually dont spend that much $ on knives. But when I saw the new price I think I'll be getting one sometime soon. :)

I love the Para 1 and I'm on my 3rd now. I just wish they were priced the same as the Para 2 :p

A combination of Sal's marketing plan and the fact that once the 1's are gone, they're gone. I would suspect as the market gets lighter on the first models the price will go up even higher for their collectible value.

I can tell you this: when they finally hit the market in sufficient quantities I'm going to buy 5 or 6 of them. I bought one off the Exchange and within 10 seconds of opening the box it was my new favorite knife. If you asked me to give a list of the features I wanted in a folding knife, the Para 2 has every one except for the wire clip---and the ergonomics are superb!

I was carrying an S90V/CF Manix 2, but it's in the safe now.

I agree 100%. There is nothing I don't like about this knife. Since I bought it, it is all that I have carried.

Yep, there are no bargains on the original anywhere! if I see anyone blowing them out I will pick up a couple more. Just like any other hobby you always want the one that's a bit tough to get. Soon every Spydie nut will have a 2, the talk will die down and we'll be hunting originals!

I was kidding. Get the Para YOU like.
Although, I have the P1 and have no desire to get the P2.
