Why S30V steel for a multi-tool?

I'm also not opposed to S30v. I even have a early 2000's lone wolf in chipping S30V and it's a good knife. Just don't see a reason for it on a multi tool. I will acknowledge however that mine opens from the inside to it's a problem to get it out. I did carry a skeleton at work for awhile and used that knife until I broke the plyers. So I guess it would be acceptable on outside blade on tools with a pocket clip.

My brain just malfunctioned for a minute until I knew you were supposed to type ’how’. 😂
Damn! Thank you for letting me know I screwed up the spelling!!!! I always use my phone and sometimes hit the wrong letter. Holy cow- my wife is the best person I ever met, I would never call her names!🤣

I like the “standard”leatherman steel. Cuts just fine and I can touch up the edge quickly on the back of my coffee mug. If I want fancy steel I’ve got ZT and benchmade. For a multi tool the standard stuff is fine by me.

I previously commented about really liking my Leatherman Charge with S30v. I have never been unhappy with my Wave either.

I want to give Leatherman a big shout-out for customer service. I keep a very old Leatherman in my chainsaw tool box. I was going through the box last week and took the tool out to clean it and found the main blade was missing (as in snapped at the base and gone). The only explanation I can think of was it got damaged by one of the other people who had access to the box when we were working on some land clearing, and they just threw it back in the box. I contacted the company and told them about the tool, and I heard back after the weekend stating they would replace the blade under warranty. Pretty amazing to me since I don’t know how it was broken. I don’t ‘need’ another tool, but I am going to purchase another simply because I want to show support for such great customer service.

I suppose you're lucky that the whole multitool wasn't missing.

Sounds like someone probably tried to use the knife as a pry bar and it broke off.

That is what I think, which makes no sense with lots of regular tools available including a pry bar. The most irritating thing is the person put it back broken without telling me. I can forgive accidents and ignorance, but not dishonesty. No more sharing with them!

S30v is light-years ahead of the standard 420hc blades leatherman uses. When sharpened properly (diamonds) it holds a great sharp working edge for a long time. I just got a new Surge today and was reminded why I put a s30v blade on my wave. The factory 420 blade was dull so fast.... I'd never make it through a work day with an acceptable sharp blade without a quality steel like s30v. Years before I got my s30v I used leatherman wingmans and such with the factory blades and was just used to my knife being dull.

I put another s30v blade from a charge on my surge.

The way i think if it is, if you want a multitool alone and are willing to carry a quality seperate knife get a multitool with the cheaper 420 blade. If you want to have one tool, your main knife is the tools knife, get a multitool with upgraded steel. S30v I would highly recommend.

To me its not so much a matter of ease of sharpening, It's a matter of making it through a work day without my blade going unusably dull. I can sharpen every evening but can't sharpen when I'm working.
