i have a question to all you hog's out there. I have been reading about Busse blades for a while, and what looks strange to me is that Busse blades seem to be more a collectors item then a user knife?
There are forumites complaining that their old knives aren't selling or that they don't make profit!

If i look at the for sale section there always seems to be a lot of Busse blades for sale.

They also don't sell at a considerable lower price.

Why would you sell them? Do people buy these blades to make profit and pamper them in a safe?

I know there are people out there that use their blades for the intended purpose, but there seems to be a lot of selling and trading of Busse knives.

Can anyone explain why?

From what I've gathered in the relatively short time I've been around Busse knives, you've got 3 kinds of people (Hogs) - those who buy them to collect and/or re-sell, those who buy them to use, and that luckiest of all, those who can afford to do both (I'm definitely not in that 3/rd catagory, yet!).

While Busse knives are unquestionably the most usable blades around, they also hold their value (or increase in value) to the extent that they can be viewed as a monetary investment. That's cool! :D

And a few people that get caught up in the moment of things and realized later(with the help of their spouse) that they should not of bought it. Luckily Im no longer in that boat so KEEP THOSE BUSSES COMING :p

Straight handles, Ergos, and Fusions.

Most of us can’t afford to have them all, and often the only way to get older and/or different models is to sell the Busses that you’ve already got.

New people, new knives, and lots of cool blades from the past, means that the trough is always a turbulent place.

I'm not sure that I will ever understand "Safe Queens", but to each their own. I will not buy unless I intend to use it, that's just me. I have to say though, I am glad to see that there are people who enjoy collecting something besides beanie babies or even better..dust.

I don't know. I've only ever sold one (a Killer B w/ factory wrap) and I wish I hadn't. I told my wife once that if we are ever broke, that I could sell my knives (justifying buying more), she lowered her chin and looked up at me and said, "I know you'll never sell those"!

And she is right. My kid is going to be taking these onto the Antiques Road Show some day.

A. If you are refering to my other post, the market varies. I was not complaining, only creating discussion on the nature of the current market. Quite frankly, I dislike being told that I am complaining when I am not. Please take a look at this again. These are good times for buyers. I myself have bought Busses when the buyer market was good for older knives.

B. I buy them to own them. I have more than I will ever need. While I do plan to make money off of them eventually, I consider some of them investments. I also know, that like myself, the next owner will be very happy to have the opportunity to own one and use it or not use it as they wish. How else will anyone down the road have the opportunity to own a new older model if not for us collectors?
C. Not every knife that I buy suits me. I really like Busse knives, and I own some of them just to see if they suit me. Sometimes, when they do not, I sell them. Other times, I hang on to them.
.
Also, I buy them for the history, to know that I am part of something bigger than myself that joins me to a group of REALLY, REALLY, REALLY great folks.
I have a few that I use, but I am not in a situation where I have a need for more than a few knives.

I think I can help with this:

People are waiting (and saving) for the Fusion Battle Mistress!

At least I am.:D

I guess that I am a #2 catagory, thankful that there are people in catagory #1 and 3. I own only one--soon to be two (a HR), and use it on duty. There are knives that cost more, knives that are hyped up a lot more, but my MS is the last knife that I would sell. I plan to buy several more Busse blades (and so the sickness begins) and I will be depending on you catagory 1 and 3's.

:( :o

I would still have all of my collection of 20 Busse Knives but I unexpectedly found myself unemployed in April.......it was very traumatic.....and very sad :( :(

Well said brother. I especially like your point on the collector being the one who may eventually facilitate newer hogs down the road in their search and acquisition of mint older models, either to collect or use for themselves. I fall into category 3, I collect several and have somewhere in the neighborhood of 10 real users of differing sizes and designs. I find joy in the using, collecting, trading and especially the friends I have made through these activites. I cherish all facets of the experience.

The BIG one?:D

Realistically, I am going to only buy Busses if I know I will use them. The BARF looks like a great fighter but the HOG FBM is the ultimate heavy duty chopper and more useful to me at this time.

That is, if I can resist the tempation to just buy everyone I see. :foot: :D

Ya, sure, like that will happen.

I think that most of the people who are selling now are those with vast collections and are more collectors. The people that have a couple Busses use them. With all the new models coming out I think that a lot of people want to finance new purchases. If EVERYONE is saving money for new models, then no one will buy the older models. This is sort of a cycle.

I for one am not interested in the older blades since they are more for collectors (as it would seem) and I consider myself a user. That is why I am saving my money for the HOG FBM.:D

I bet an Aftershock Bolo would change your mind Peter! :D

That (Aftershock Bolo) is an exception to the previously stated rule.:p

Their is something about a satin, zero edge and recurve that really begs to be used. The fact that it is 9.5 inches long does not break the deal either!
