Why so cautious around non-knife people

So there you are, walking into the mall with your wife on a Saturday afternoon, or visiting a new client at his premises. Out of the corner of your eye you see a young fellow whip out a 3 - 4 inch blade and quickly cut something he’s bent over. With one hand he deftly closes the folder and inserts the knife back into his pocket. He quickly checks left and right to see if anybody noticed.

Don’t tell me you’re not going to be keeping an eye on him while he’s within your view. And if you see him later in the day you’ll watch him to
• Size him up ie is he ‘one of us’ or some nutter?
• Check that he is not behaving suspiciously
• See what knife he’s carrying.

Now how do you think any of those sheeple we’re always complaining about will react?

I remember many years ago before ‘everybody’ was carrying clipped being served coffee at a sidewalk café by a young waiter who had a folder clipped in his right front jeans pocket. It was busy and I didn’t get a chance to chat to him but I remember being intrigued by the situation. He was very young and serious and it looked like a pretty big knife!

Good thread:thumbup:

I usually carry a 3"-3.5" bladed one handed opener.I don't snap it open in public, but I don't open it two handed either.
The reason I'm cautious using around NKP,is because if they somehow feel threatened, they can make a phone call & even though what I'm carrying/using may be legal,it could still hold up my day, inherently costing me time/money & unnecessary aggravation.

Just a reminder to all the people that say "I have no problem carrying or using 'here' ".If your location is not filled out & you don't state where you are, here could be anywhere.I see this all the time in threads regarding knife laws.:rolleyes:Where are you?Where is HERE?

I don’t mind explaining about my hobby :-). I’ve converted a few people on the way. Some people who didn’t get it at first, now own a decent folder. Funny enough, it’s easier with women because they can put a knife in a handbag and see the practical side (on the spot food preparation) of carrying a knife. Men tend to focus on a knife as a potential weapon.

I agree that the first reaction can be frustrating. It would be great if people were more open minded.

The only thing I would do is number 3, I do it everyday (almost) I even ask people if they are carrying a such and such knife every once in a while. Sometimes they don't know what they have, rarely is it anything good.

It always pays to be cautious. Nobody lives in a vacuum, and there's no reason that the world would be arranged to fit your desires or needs. With that in mind, I always try to tread lightly, listen quietly, and act decisively.

We rarely act solely based on legal standards, instead relying on decision-making based on social contracts. Knife carrying is no exception.

This is true.

Although I'll add that when doing legal activities around the sheeple it does help to act like you are doing something totally LEGAL.

Your manner is being watched as much as your knife.

If I'm using a knife responsibly and in a legal-carry area I really dont care who sees or fears it.

And I havent had one negative incident.

Why would I? I'm no sheep to be intimidated.

Yeah if someone pulls out a knife I will be keeping my eye on them just to see what they are doing with it believe me. ;)

It would be foolish to just ignore it and turn your back on them etc....

Well, I suppose if they pull it out and swing it wildly in the air, pointed in your direction, you should pay attention.

If they are just minding their own business, cutting something, I dont see why they would be a larger threat than anyone else...unless you are insinuating that people that use knives are inherently more dangerous than the rest of the populace?

It's called being aware of what's going on around you. ;)

Now if was someone who was cutting something like say a worker etc then I wouldn't be too worried about it...

If the person was someone who pulled it out and was playing with it or acting strange etc then I wouldn't take my eyes off of them until they put it away....

I believe he's insinuating that it is wise to be aware of your surroundings, including the people in them.:)
Of course I wil notice if someone is using a knife. I also notice the cars coming down the street, dogs walking along, obstacles on the ground...
One time my awareness garnered me a free $20 bill which was laying on the ground!
Awareness pays off.

I have a permit to carry a firearm concealed and it allows me to carry any knife, too.
So I really could care what anyone thinks about my pistols or my knives.

I wish the permits here included knives. They are Concealed Firearm permits, and specifically don't include knives. So technically, I can be carrying my .40 Glock with a 15 round clip, and if the officer can through some super human feat of wrist action get my folder to flip open without using his thumb, then it is a "gravity knife" which has the same penalty as carrying a switch blade. With my folders, and fixed blades which I EDC all the time I make a point of having at least the handle or clip and top of the handle showing.

I try not to be obnoxious with a knife. I try not to be flashy or go for any wow factor. Just cut what needs to be cut simply and efficiently and put the knife away.

I also try to educate non knife people, but that is often like trying to educate simpletons.

AS to the OP

+1
Situational awareness is a good thing. Of course I'd like to know who is carrying what (in my general vicinity) as far as potential weaponry. It's a survivor trait and perfectly natural.
It's about awareness, not judgment.

Reading some of these post about guys and their "phobias" makes me glad I work in an environment where the mere sight of someone holding a new knife makes my 75+ co-workers nearly line up for a chance to handle it. Of course being that it's a metal fabrication shop with multiple types of craft working there helps too. Most are outdoors type, collectors, users or just plain in control of their balls and don't scream like a four year old girl if a knife is displayed......it's sad they're people out there who make such an issue about a guy carrying a pocket knife....

Thats what I like about Indiana. We can carry whatever we want. Hell, you could carry a .50 cal rifle into Wal-Mart and the only thing that would happen is someone would offer you a cart to put it in.

Ironically, the only real rule regarding guns and knives is actually a ban against throwing stars. We ain't allowed to make or use them here. :D

Indiana's laws are second to none. They are seriously some of the best in the country when it comes to knives/guns.

I used to live there, so I know exactly what I am missing and these GA laws really annoy me as a result. :(
