How do you guys cope?

Well, it works like this... you grow up, you move out, find a girl who loves you so much that she doesn't care too much about your knife addiction.

I just make sure I pay the bills first and then I think of ways to get to the next buy. Good blades are very expensive here, so I often have to pay off on my credit card over 6 months. I don't think one can ever own too many knives

My parents used to do the same thing. They eventually got over it and don't say much about it. Dad will occasionally see me playing with a knife, and if it's one he hasn't seen, will ask to see it and ask questions about it. Mom still gets on me some, but she's learning. This summer when I came back from Blade in Atlanta, my dad was looking at my new toys. Mom asked the question "how much did those cost?" Before I could spout off the standard answer that consists of stating a price that's about 1/4 of what I really paid, Dad just looks at here and says "don't ask! you don't want to know. Just be happy not knowing, it's much easier to deal with."

I actually prefer not letting people know the prices of my knives. It has nothing to do with them freaking out with the "why would you pay so much for a knife?!!" questions. My reasons are actually kind of funny... I had let some of my mom's family know how much my folder I was carrying was worth ($400 custom Carson.) Later that night, we were opening Christmas presents and someone got a box that required a knife to remove the contents. I handed my knife to my aunt, and she barely touched the box with the knife, then refused to use the knife because "it's too expensive!" Fortunately for me, dad was there to grab the knife and rip into the box and plastic ties without hesitation. I carry a folder to USE. I carry the best I can afford. I don't carry it to be looked at and have people think I'm nuts for the cost. I buy it because I love the quality and the feeling I get from using such an awesome tool.

Why do they ask that question?
They don't ask why another stamp?, why another coin?
What is it about collecting knives that doesn't sink into peoples heads?
I was never even asked "why another gun?"

Is there something about knives that accumulating them seems so bizarre to people?

thats true, it seems people are more accepting of people who collect guns then those that collect knives. I mean if you say you collect guns they'll GET IT but if you say you collect knives they will be like HUH? weird considering a gun is often considered more dangerous and a good gun like a sig will cost you the same as a good custom knife

Yeah i dont know if i could spring bucks like that for a custom, cause i would much rather have a sig

I was lucky in that my parents supported my addiction to a point. They looked at as a much better way to spend my money than on drugs or booze. Of course I did get a bit of an earful when I spend $150 on my first khukuri. Once it got here though, Mom thought that it was quite a piece. I got a little worried when she was hefting it in one hand, saying "You know, you could take someone's head off with this thing". Note to self: Don't make Mom angry. Of course I've had other people think the same about me just because I own all of these beautiful little toys. Bottom line, just ride out the storm, chances are good she'll see the light someday. One really good way to butter her up would be to get her a really nice set of kitchen knives. She'll see the value of using a high quality tool and maybe understand where you're coming from a little better.
