I like both companies.

Spydercos are a little more affordable overall and they still produce a lot of lock-back models. I like the lock-back very much and wish Benchmade had a few lock-back models too.

The two greatest things I like about Benchmade are that they use dual steel or titanium liners, and the Axis-lock.

As far as I’m here (BFC) this question has risen numerous times (use Search function) and always opinions were divided more or less equally.

Basically I agree with Cpirtle completely.
As to particular knives – my urban jeans-n-polo EDC knife is Benchmade 551 Griptilian and my around-household EDC is SPYDERCO Military. My common foreign travel knife for long time was SPYDERCO Delica, however recently BENCHMADE Mini-Griptilian makes some competition to it. Going formally dressed I always have hard choice between SPYDERCO Bob Lum Chinese Folder and BENCHMADE Warren Osborne 940. Choosing outdoors knife I would go with SPYDERCO Bill Moran Featherweight fixed blade, however being pressed to go with folder I would go with BENCHMADE 750 Pinnacle (unfortunately discontinued). Designing my own outdoors folder I would go with SPYDERCO because they have compression lock and round opening hole. Designing my own urban EDC I would go with BENCHMADE because they have axis lock. And so on...

Maybe all depends on what you do like and what knife use is intended? Maybe it is no sense to compare manufacturing companies? Maybe much more sensibly would be to compare particular knives?
