Why Spyderco Military/Para?

Haze is right. Spydercos, I have not yet. I was in my favorite knife shop 2 weeks ago, and was inspired to grip a military, and wow, it just feels great. I will own one. There are way too many good sources (credible fanboys, and fangirls aka Jill) to ignore.

I was feeling the same as you when I first looked at spydercos. Everyone was giving great reviews on them and I kept seeing them all over the forum. After a while, the looks of the spyderco kinda grows on you. You keep hearing all the great reviews and everyone recommends them. Then, you finally decide to take the plunge. I bought the d2 paramilitary as my first spyderco. Man let me tell ya, when opening up that box and holding the para, opening up the blade, its like love at first sight! You automatically feel extreme quality and beauty and reliability all in one little knife. I definitely recommend you buy yourself a spyderco, specifically a paramilitary. Warning: you'll become addicted and it may severely hurt your wallet!

Am I the only one the doesn't like the shape of spyderco knives? From what i've read in this forum i seem to be the only one. :(

You're not alone. With exception of my Waved Endura - so nice I just bought another - I find the shape of many of their knives remind me of baby crocodiles and I don't like that look. I think a Waved Military would just be awesome. However, they're well made and function beautifully so I really appreciate all my Spydies even if I hate their look

I remembered seeing Spyderco's at gunshows about 10 years ago and thinking that the exact same thing, I thought they looked really weird and were way over priced, of course back then the most expensive knife I owned was a $25 Gerber, plus several junk Chinese folders, I really started to get into knives about a year ago when I wanted one good strong folder and started doing research, I too read lots of great reviews and they started growing on me, about a year later and i have a paramil, a zdp delica, and salt 1 :D

Some Spydercos are looking a bit unspectacular compared to for example some Benchmade Models, because no false edge, flat grinde and something like that but if you need a knife for hard use, that not faile on you, Spyderco rules.

I didn't like the looks of the Delica at first. It just didn't match with my ideas of how a knife is supposed to look. But then I got one anyway just to try it out, since I had heard so many good things about it. After I had used it for a while, I compared it to one of my older knives (which I did like the looks of) and I realized that there is so much unnecessary material on the handle and blade of my older knife that just makes it big and clunky and adds extra weight for no reason.

All of a sudden that knife became a lot uglier than the Delica.

The way a knife looks is a subjective thing... for cutting performance they cannot be beat. They are designed to cut - period.

They also feel good in the hand. Combine that with high quality materials and the best steels in the business and a commitment to innovation and that adds up to legions of satisfied customers.

If you dont want to commit to the expense of a Millie or Para get yourself an Endura and you'll see.

And then we can say "we told you so". ;)

If you held one and used one for awhile, you would begin to love the looks of them. You would realize that the funny shape means it is one comfortable cutting tool.

i certainly understand Dyau opinion , objectivity changes with tlme in some cases.i've carried spydies since the early 80s & until recently after a rekindled interest in old timey patterns in new relesses [queen g.e.c. & others] never thought about the ethetetics of spydies .Dyau certainly has a good point.the quality & perfprmance of these knives are their beauty.if you place a spydie next to a g.e.c. with stag handles then spydies are ugly ducklings. however i've always placed performance in front of pretty so use is more important than beauty.newbies certatinly have a point when first looking at the 2 types.i'm a person that can see beauty in pearl & engineering equally.my g.e.c. mdl.23 in stag is breathtaking but the mule in M4 is also breathtaking.

I think Spyderco is "an acquired taste" not unlike the Glock. Many are offput by the looks of a Glock but the more you use/carry one the prettier it gets. VERY few people who give a Glock a chance continue to be critical. Just give Spyderco a chance and get back with us.

I've run the folder gauntlet and the P Mill is always in my pocket.
If that Leafstorm was a little bigger... :D

I didn't own any, then bought a used 1st generation Endura here on the for sale forums; later I bought a 4th generation Endura and a stainless Native here too. After all this time, now I know what all the hype is about.

I have a lot of knice knives, but if I had discovered Spydercos ten years ago, I don't know if my knife interest would be what it is today - they're that good. I probably wouldn't have had the interest in getting more knives. I wouldn't have needed them.

edited to add: "knice knives" - that wasn't intentional, but I'll leave it. :)

thx - cpr

I've always liked the Police model over the Military and Para-Military models.
Especially against the Para for blade to handle ratio. IMO, quite a few models of Spyderco do that.
The Police is a real slicer for me.

Hey guys! Am i glad i'm not alone thinking this, you guys make me feel a lot better! :)

It seems I really do need to hold on to appreciate them, and you guys have convinced me to get one! But I need to find the money first >.>, money's hard to find as a high school student so who wants to send me one? :D

What would you recommend for my first spyderco? Seems like the most popular ones are the Millie, Para, and the Endura.

I find the shape of many of their knives remind me of baby crocodiles and I don't like that look.

That's exactly what I think! :D

I think some of them look like Pterodactyls, you know, the flying dinosaurs?

Man you can grab a Delica 4 for 40 bucks at most places. Xmas is right around the corner. Or mow some yards!

I was slightly skeptical of spyderco's ergos too. After seeing so much praise for them on the board, and the para in particular, I decided to make the para my first spyderco and high quality folder.

I have to say, it exceeded my expectations. I love the way the blade shape, handle and jimping work together for hard cutting tasks. The s30v steel has a tremendous edge and has held it very well. I would like a provision for a tip up clip, but I'm getting used to tip down carry.

Now I find myself wanting a sprint run manix 2, a cd caly3, and a mili2 whenever that is released (since I don't care for liner locks). Anyway, buy the paramilitary with confidence!

I owned my Military for about 8 months before I really even started using it consistantly. Not real crazy about the looks still 2+ years later but love the way the thing just flat out works. Feels great in the hand and cuts like crazy. Very good edge holding with good blade geometry.

Thanks for the responses guys. Would the military/paramilitary/endura be suited for camping/backpacking use? Because i've heard that the tip or blade is too thin for "hard use".

Damn, those are some nice pics, especially the second one. What camera do you use?
