Why spyderco military?

I have noticed that the millie have many fans that just says it is the best knife that spyderco has to offer. And I wonder, why? I mean it is good looking, but it has many cons as well. Linerlock, only tip down carry, long and slender blade, and the tip looks weak. So I ask you millie fans, why do you like it so much? I plan on getting one but for me the clip position just sucks.

Its a big blade in a thin package that is easy to carry.

Feels good in the hand, and the shape of the scales keeps your hand from sliding off in either direction.

Thin tip? Yeah. Good for digging splinters and stabbing and all manner of other stuff. Not good for prying. Depends on what you want to do with your knife.

Opens smoothly, and can be closed quickly with one hand.

As for the clip position, I am right handed but carry my knife in my left pocket as I have a pistol in my right pocket. So the clip position is fine for me, where I remove the knife from my pocket with my left and and transfer it to my right. I would prefer tip up if I carried in my right pocket, though.

Basically - for me at least - it is lots of blade in a thin package that I don't know is there until I need it.

Just buy one and see..... ;)

You cannot tell someone about the Matrix, they have to experience it for themselves.

Too big and bulky for me, and I can't imagine wanting that thick a blade on a pocket knife. However, the Military is one of a number of Spyderco models which have avid cheering sections and it has survived the test of time. That, of course proves little, Firefly lasted but one season while Oprah's been on for decades. Bottom line, whether or not the Military is right for you is something only you can determine.

Speaking only for myself, but I suspect others who carry the Military and love it don't see any of the attributes you mentioned as cons. As everyone is saying, you need to try one for sure.

Both Millies are outstanding! I lean towards the Para.
Get on and see.
Did someone already say that?

Hi Atsipatsi,

The Military is a large folder (4" blade) in a light package that carries easily. The distal tapered full flat grind uses high performance steels and cuts quite well. It's easily used with gloves.

It's been continuously refined for the past 10+ years.

The Military2, while still being engineered, will have a 4 way clip.

I hope that the second version comes with the same cool colors that the first one. I have been looking the orange one but the clip is deal breaker for me. The 4way clip would be awesome.

+1 what powernoodle said.

The liner lock makes for a simple, open design for easy inspection and cleaning. Spyderco makes a good one with a strong detent, smooth pivot, and solid lockup. Very high quality knife.

Actually, The first Military I bought was a weird case for me.
I've ordered it at a store, and once it arrived, I refused to take it. It occured to me after ordering that this knife is just not it. However, feeling responsible, I paid the guy and picked up the knife 2 weeks after it has arrived.
After only a day of use, I ordered another one.
That was 3 years ago and now I've got 9 Milllies. :)

I know I didn't explain WHY I like it so much, but the guys above did a good job doing that already.

I have had tip-up knives come open in my pockets a few times, so I greatly prefer tip-down carry. The only reasons I support four-way clip positioning are 1) Not everyone is like me and 2) RH tip down is one of the options. ;) As for why I like the Military so much, most of that has been covered. I'll add that it is a perfect fit for my hand.

No thread about the Military is complete without the Milliwheel. :D

For a knife this size, I find tip-down carry to be a lot better than tip-up. When you pull it out of the pocket, your thumb is already on the spydiehole.

Just one of the good points about the Millie. There are maaaany more!

(Dang, that wheel pic still haunts me. :grumpy: Gotta get another Millie, to make it a round-eight!) :)

You listed one of the main reasons the Military is better than the rest right there, not many knives come with a splinter picker tip in a package like that anymore. Personally I greatly dislike liner locks, but the handle shape and cutting performance on the Military blow everything else away.
It is the ultimate utility knife.

Because it's not some bloated, overweight, glorified folding prybar. ;)

It's an unadulterated "knife" and does what it supposed to do .... cut things.

IMHO, for it's blade size and weight -it will outcut the majority of production and custom folding/ fixed blade knives available.

If you really "think" the clip position will bother you, you need to try one out. The clip position is absolutely PERFECT on the Millie... It could not be better. Most of my knives are Tip Up... but ESPECIALLY Spydercos are better suited to Tip Down. Your fingers just go on the hole and "zing"... Knife ready. Why do I like the Millie?

USA MADE, Highest quality... Fit and finish, Materials, overall design.

There are LOTS of videos on YouTube on the Millie... You can get a better idea of what folks are talking about with vids I think... just search "Spyderco Military" on YouTube.com

I tend to the para myself. Not because anything is wrong with the Military. On both I love the distal taper to the blade. They slice like lasers and flat out-cut my other folders which tend to be sharpened pry-bars. Yes its not as strong but then again its not a pry-bar.
