Why The 510?

I have quite a few Mora Knives but after hanging around here for a while now I hear a lot about the 510 Mora. Why the preference for the 510?

I don;t have any yet, but I just ordered 4 knives from Ragnar Tuesday evening. I ordered an EKA H8 and Moras 740, 760, and 780. Just looking at the 510, my guess would be two things: the .098 steel thickness and the subdued finger guard near the hilt. Plus, the plastic scales are high-vis orange. The 511 and up have this large, drooping guard that most people probably don;t like. You probably already thought of these things.

Just a guess Jim...as I said, my first Mora(s) haven't yet arrived!

It's just a personal thing with me. The handle fits my hand very well, I don't mind the sheath it comes with, and it's the perfect size and weight for most of my camp, cook, and clean duties.

Coupled with either a axe or a saw, and SAK it's the perfect light to medium duty field knife.

Well, it's the only mora I own, but here are some reasons I like it, and why others may as well:

*Price (At only $9, what's not to like?)

*Guardless (or nearly so)

*Perfect size for a belt knife

*Nearly full hidden tang (some people just like the idea that the tang goes almost to the very end of the handle)

*Red handle (Some people like it if they ever drop it, others hate it because it is so bright and cheesy looking. I'm in the middle and my solution was to wrap it, looks a little better, but still easy to find with the red ends)

*Obviously the same blade features that most other moras offer.

*light weight

*Handle material is hard and durable, yet still plenty grippy.

*Carbon steel blade.

*Did I mention price?

Of course some of these points also apply for many of the other Mora knives.

I think the price is the biggest selling point for me. You get a lot for the money. Of course if I could afford to, I would also own a nice wood Puukko, but even if I did, I'd still have a 510 lying around as a backup, beater, or loaner knife.
And of course I can't help but post a pic of mine, even though I've done so a hundred times:

I like that sheath as well. I had one like that for a pair of pliars some time back. I am sure sold on the Mora knives. They are not big choppers but then thats what axes are for.

The 510 is one of those knives that you have to handle and use to 'get it'. Before I got one, I didn't understand the hype and thought they looked pretty ugly. I grudgingly picked one up, and now it's my favorite user. They just feel perfect in the hand, they are amenable to many different hand positions, and of course the Mora blade does quite a fine job.

As someone here said, it's one of those knives that just 'has it'.

I have a 510, but it is not my favorite. I can see why people consider it a favorite though, for all the reasons mentioned, so I will not repeat. My personal favorite is the 7 series Frosts, 740 and 780. A bit more belly and a larger grip make these just right for me. My 510 pictured.

when I asked my wife why she married a wierdo like me she said " it just felt right and it still does" same applies to the 510

I just got a 510 and spent some of this evening sharpening it up after giving it an apple cider vinegar patina earlier this week. I don't appreciate the bright red handle - but other than that the size and "fit" are perfect. No guard to get in the way but the handle is certainly shaped for secure use. Looking forward to using it and at $9 you can't go wrong. It's not going to replace a finer high-quality puukko but it's still a great knife.
