Why the big knife?

G'day PM

To add a discussion point, I would be interested to see how the comparison would go if the axe was used with greater accuracy

Have a look at the spread of cuts with the axe in the third pic, compared to the spread of cuts with the KZ in the 4th pic. This is probably best shown in the 5th pic.

Which one do you think removed the most wood?

Kind regards
Mick

The one thing that seems to get missed with the big knife weighs less than an axe argument is in the weight of a big knife sheath that will weigh about 12 ounces on a 9" plus blade.

That's why I like the GB SFA, when you look at the total weight of the knife and sheath, there is no difference.

If you like a big knife use it, but I will stick with a small axe.

Is this because people are confussing their skill with a particular tool with the inherent usefullness of a different tool in someone elses hand?

Or is it just an exercise in justifying their choice of tool? :D

Kind regards

P.S As stated before, IMO vigorousness in discussion of opinion is a good thing :thumbup: :D

On my 9 inch woods knife the sheath weighs closer to 4 oz than 12.

Doc

Hi Doc, I hope my post didn't come across that way. I love big knives, just have no use for them.

Something I don't understand:

Whenever this topic comes up, folks seem to come up with the idea that big knife users use big knives to the exclusion of small knives. Where does that come from? Most people I know carry a large tool (axe, knife, machete, etc) and a small(er) knife. What's the big contradiction coming from?

No offense to the OP, but I scratch my head at this too. I like muh big knife, but that does not mean I leave other essential tools behind. A a sub 4" belt knife and folding saw accompany it so the formula is the same. Precise cutting tool, larger cutting/chopping tool, sawing tool.

When it comes to cutting poles and such like shelter building, the Silky saw just blows away my axes and big knives, it is as close to effortless as I have ever seen, next to a chain saw. In my camping gear is always a big knife, it probably has cob webs on it though.:D. I like a thin 6-7 inch blade for camp cooking, something like the CS long hunter or my JK Camp Cook knife.

great job keeping this civil guys. These responses are great!

Personally?

I think I must be compensating for something.

But I can't think what it could be.:)

If I could work a small axe like Ray Mears I would be more likely to use an axe. I think that guy could clean a field mouse with an axe.

None of my big knives have a sheath anywhere near 12oz for just the sheath??? Maybe 6 tops...

(Main question) I usually carried a Benchmade LFK 10100, it has a 5.2 inch blade and folds into the handle, great to get to those screws under the bike between the motor and trans when you cant reach with your screwdriver. Apart from that just a good all around knife for SD too.

Serrated helped for clearing brush behind the house too. :D

Doc

You nailed it Doc.

Everyone has thier own reasons for using what they use.

some like little knives and hatchets

others like "BIG" knives..whatever that means

and some people just have a knife that works for them and carry an axe.

why waste time argueing over who is right when its a subject based on personal preference? Why argue because you're offended that the rest of the forum doesnt prefer your set up? The topic of this post was a question..why are there 5 pages of answers?..Because no one has a clear cut ( hahaha) answer. We're talking oranges and apples here..different flavours..Both fruit.

I think all of the tools we use do the jobs we need them for. Obviously, we're all here to talk about. The weight issue doesn't hold up for me. My GB mini and sak weigh less (15-16oz) than a big knife and IMO do the jobs they need to do better than a big knife. Plus I'm not completely SOL if I lose one. I do carry a 4 inch belt knife but only because I like it and not because I need it. But carry what you like.

Doc

I'm with Doc 110 percent on this, unless he's carrying different gear than I am, which makes him 143.67 percent wrong.:D

Seriously, Doc brings up an excellent point — too many threads become contentious over the silliest things. I'm often reminded of the war between Lilliput and Blefuscu in Gulliver's Travels; one faction insisting that eggs be broken at the small end, the other that they be broken at the large end.

Seems sort of silly to most of us, yet we often do exactly as Doc says, and argue over little things that really don't make much difference in the larger scheme of things.

Use whatever knife and method you like to break your eggs, the way that works best for you.

Of course, if you're not doing it my way, then you're doing it wrong.:D

I carry a "big" knife sometimes for this reason:

My chainsaw takes up too much room and would scare the tourists.

Especially when I put on my eye/face protection mask made of human skin...

But seriously...

I carry a "big" knife only part of the time. My Sweet Lucille is a Becker BK9 and she usually only comes out of the house when I'm going to be gone for a few days and will need some fire wood and such.

If it's a day hike I carry my RC5. Good compromise between length and ease of carry.

Weight never really bothered me much...especially since, if I'm not mistaken, the RC5 weighs just about as much as the BK9....

I've never carried a hatchet/knife combo. I tried carrying a CS Trailhawk/knife combo but it was just too much shit to mess with. My big knife gives me the serviceable functionality of a chopper, combined with the ability to do finer tasks. Now, by "finer" do I mean whittling spoons and ducks and such? No. But I've made quite a few figure four traps and bow drill sets with Sweet Lucille. Besides....I can eat with chopsticks.

now now DawsonBob, one breaks eggs on the side, holding them with the fingers on the large and small end.:D

Heretic! That's heretical, Bushy! Any right thinking person knows that eggs should be broken only at the small end... or was that the big end... maybe the medium end... and only with a silver plated egg breaker made by one of our fine egg-breaker-makers here on this board.

Breaking eggs in the middle would make too much sense, and there would be nothing to fight over: we can't have that.
