Why the encased ball lock?

The encased ball lock on my P'kal works fine, but I actually prefer the non-encased version of the lock. Why was the decision made to go encased? Does it offer some advantages? And how tough is the little rod which guides the spring? I know it's probably okay, but I like metal rods better; they just give me more peace of mind.

Would it be possible to have BOTH versions of the ball lock in new models, or would that screw up production costs too much?

I don't have one, but it sounds intresting. I have a DODO. You wouldn't have a photo of it would you?

Unfortunately not, as I spent my money on knives rather than cameras. The Warriors and Wonders web-site has a so-so picture of it, but hopefully one of the other forumites here will post a pic.

Hi Stabman,

The cage permits a smaller ball which takes up less room in the handle and permits a narrower knife.

Well that's certainly a good reason. I can see what you mean when I look at the P'kal again; it would have to be shaped a bit differently to allow a larger ball.

Thanks for the feedback.:)
