Why the F?*@% would anyone want to buy to other overpriced hardcore knives?

Hey, we all started with the Bucks and Gerbers, I know I did. I moved up to the Benchmades and now I'm at this level.

I still don't hear anyone complaining about their "other brand" knives failing or being weak. Hey, buy what you want, it's your money.

I'm just open minded about what's out there, and what in reality a knife will be used for.

If someone wants to buy another brand, and that brand does all that person wants out of it, good for them. .

This is where we all most probably started.

Thus begins the quest for improvement

they will hopefully re-evaluate their parameters,

This is where one makes a decision of staying with the offerings in a certain price range and their associated characteristics, or moving up in the price/quality spectrum.

do more research, and buy something that fits their new level of needs.

This is where the decision to get a higher end blade comes in. This is also where divergence will occur, based on tastes and perceptions. Some will buy Busse, and some will buy other brand offerings.

This is the nature of things.

Get past it.

There are other knives on the market that offer features that might be more useful to some. My Strider AR was far better for cutting and slicing that any small Busse I owned. The small Busses were exceptional in that they are way over built, but I have found that for a small using knife, I am better suited by and economical Victornox Adventurer.

As far as large knives go, I think you'd be hard pressed to find a knife as tough as the Battle Mistress or Steel Heart. But then again someone might find a Mad Dog ATAK to be better suited to their needs, particularly if slicing and cutting is required. In tactical forums, there was a reference to the ATAK surpasing all the requirements to be used for Spec.Ops. Oh what a shame they didn't make it out of something better than that crappy old 0-1 tool without being sprinklrd with fairy dust. I doubt soldiers in the military toil over whether they get a Busse, Strider or Mad Dog...or if they carry something less expensive. There is more to surviving that situation than the brand of overpriced cutlery you carry. For us knife enthusiasts, it is a matter of because we can, not because we really need the special xyz brand.

Your original title is ridiculous. You are saying in your statement that Busses are infact overpriced(so if we are paying too much for them, then why not another luxury tool as well). There are many reasons why a particular individual may prefer another brand over Busse. There are many reasons why a Busse knife would be prefered, and why I would prefer having a Busse. Again, not because I will ever use it to its full potential(it's just kinda like having insurance maybe, but in practical use I will break and die before most knives will) But this discussion is way beyond owning just a functional tool. Most of us own other brands because asthetically another knife might be more to our liking.

Lurkers, everything you just wrote was more or less said in previous posts in this thread.

It's our philisophy- Be nice to others and they will be nice to you. It's a proven one as well- when there aren't attacks and nastiness, the level of discussion and the sense of community always increases.

This is not to say that you cannot disagree with anything that you see posted. Just don't be nasty about it. Back up your point of view with facts, logic and reason and you will see the same kind of responses to your own statements.

Show common courtesy, and it will be more than shown to you.

*For those who need a more complete definition of nice, this means you do not harrass, slander, defame, lie, cheat, or otherwise act nasty. No flames, no trolls, no name calling. For a more detailed explanation, please click here.

I own all kinds of knives. I bet my life on my Busse. My decisions are based on my needs and skill level. I had a SHBM on my LBV for several years before I retired from the military. Now I keep my SH Variant in my B.O.B. I still use some of my Gerbers and even carry a SERE 2000 as my everyday tool. Guess what? They work for me. Just my .02 worth

Good stuff. . . good stuff. . . Lots that I agree with. . . and lots that I don't agree with. . .

Whereas the Internet has made the subject of knife performance a more open subject of discussion, it has also done quite a bit to cloud the truth  as well. Many well meaning, but misdirected individuals have blown so much hot air over the world-wide-web that discerning fact from fiction has become a slow and muddling affair. Fictional statements that are rarely backed up with any documentation have become common place.

I stand by the belief that the only folks capable of objectively evaluating a particular brand’s knife performance and then publishing the results are the manufacturers or makers of that brand. Why, you may ask? The answer is simple, it’s because they are the ones who ultimately have to answer for their claims and findings. If the maker or manufacturer says it, then it had better be true or they will be long gone before they have time to figure out what happened. Therein also lies the crux. Why would any maker or manufacturer enter into a “live” public demonstration of their product when they know before-hand that their knife will not perform to an impressive degree? They wouldn’t, unless they drink more than I do, and I don’t believe that is possible!!!!! ;) It is also the reason why Busse Combat started doing “live” demonstrations at knife shows more than 7 years ago. We believe that if a manufacturer is going to promote their knife as being a combat or survival blade worthy of betting your life on, then they should be willing to demonstrate and publish the limitations of their equipment. If not, then the consumer should take that into account. If the consumer doesn’t care about these results, then they don’t care, and that’s fine too.

In the end, we should be glad that we are all fairly like-minded and that we have MUCH more in common than we have that separates us. We all love knives and that’s why we’re here reading this thread.

I think this thread has run its course, so I’m locking it down.

Let’s drink!

Jerry
