Why the Love for PM?

This is a serious question. What makes the PM2 such a knife that has its cult-like following? I understand it's one of the most counterfeited Spyderco knives available. Is it the look, the feel, the lock, the combination of the above or do you own one just because that's what you're supposed to do, being a Spyderco fan?

It one of the Spyderco knives I've yet to see in-person.

Lol. Who ever said that's what you're supposed to do?

The reason it has such a following is because it's a great knife. A great design that's well built.

It's not for everyone and that's ok. I find it strange how this same thread pops up every few weeks. Like people are somehow offended that they don't like the para 2. I'm not saying you are, but I've seen it before.

Well built, great slicer, strong lock, and reasonably priced. A tough combo to beat!

For me it is
Blade shape.
Compression lock
and decent ergo

To me it's the best all around balance of qualities. Absolutely perfect ergonomics for my hand, great blade steels (I have the 204P version), great lock design, excellent blade shape, light weight, and very reasonable price. It's the last Spyderco I'd let go of if I had to get rid of my collection. I wear gloves frequently at work and my job can be a little tough on knives so I tend to carry my CruWear Military the most, but the PM2 still makes very regular appearances, and gets carried a lot after work around the acreage. It's just a fantastic knife.

I think the feature that puts it over the top is the compression lock. It's a very "spyderco" feature and it's only used on the paramilitary...and the yojimbo2. Unless I'm forgetting one?

^^ This, for me. I've owned and praised Paras for years. Long before the Para 2 and the popularity of the knife. They're just about perfect for an everyday, general purpose knife in the ways that I need a knife to be. They aren't for everyone. Plenty of folks here on BF don't care for them. But for those that find the design useful, it's about as useful as any knife on the market. And the popularity hasn't had much impact on the pricing of the basic model. Just about anyone that want one can afford some variety of the Para 2.

Superhawk, Superleaf, Szabo, ATR, Junior and I think there are a few more discontinued models that had it as well.

I like it because it's fast to draw, use, unlock and repocket. The larger Spydie Hole and Compression Lock make it very desirable to me.

Lots of Spydercos have used the Compression Lock! Salsa, Lil Temp, Gunting, Vesuvius, ATR Ti & SS, Yo 1 & 2, Para Miitary 1 & 2, Super Hawk and Super Leaf

To me it's about the versatility of it.
Not too big, not too small, not too heavy, not too light. Right in the Goldilocks zone.
Fits almost any hand with a very secure grip, strong intuitive lock design, fast easy blade deployment and retraction.
Blade steels are from very good to top of the line, in a very slicy blade design.
And entry level price is an outright bargain.

Sorry, I've not seen a similar thread. If I did, I would not have started this one. I've been known for bumping threads that are several years old, so a new one doesn't need to be created.

I had forgotten about the extra large deployment hole, as being a plus for a gloved hand. Thanks.

I was trying to avoid my recent "try and return it" process, that's already cost me because of an Endura-4, Native-5 and Persistence. It may just come down to that though.

Just be sure to get a legit PM2. It's really a great knife.

Great responses so far everyone. I really do appreciate it. As mentioned, I'm trying to avoid the hassle of trying it and then possibly returning it, as I've seem to have been doing lately. I went to the Cabelas in Delaware this morning. They had a small selection of Spydercos, but not the PM2 that I was hoping to fondle.

They come up often in the exchange here that's where I got 7 of the 8 I've had.

It's an amazingly well designed and manufactured cutting tool. That's about all there is to it.
Very refined, fits a wide variety of hand sizes/grips, lightweight for its size and structural strength, and comes at a reasonable price-point. Also comes in many of the latest flavors of steel to fit many individual needs and preferences. You don't get much of that availability outside of custom knives (or at mid-tech and higher prices).

The only reason it has been counterfeited so much is simply because of its' universal success.

If you don't have another local knife shop, do you maybe have a Bass Pro Shops near you? I have seen them in-stock at those stores before, but I guess that can still vary depending on location.

Thanks. Yea, there's one in AC, but parking is a pain in the balls.
