Why the short blade length on the Gunting

Hi there! I been studing the spec's on variouos Spyderco knives. I have decided that the Chinook and the Military are going to be my next purchases for EDC type of knives. I like the look of the Gunting, but the blade seems a little to short to be effective in a knife fight. It looks like it is geared to be both an impact device and have grappling applications.

Alien,
Bram made it that way so the G would be legal just about everywhere! 3" is enough, especially when you learn how to use it!Beauty of it is ,that it's to be used up close, you open the G on the
BG while you are slamin & jamin! Those who use it,start carrying the drone to use ,slicen & dicin is too easy with the live blade, once you learn. Live blade is also used for everyday cutting chores! I still carry my live G a little more than the drone!

The length of the knife does not have to be long to cut. A 3" blade would cut right through the arm. Also consider the lock on the Gunting is the strongest ever made. In a knife fight, you do not want the lock to give way. Please check out Bram's new website at www.cssdsc.com to find out more.

Thanks
George

Personally, I don't want someone trying to cut me up with a /Ladybug/, much less a Gunting.

I'm a new Gunting owner.

I find the knife to be possibly the highest quality Spyderco knife I've ever owned. No better quality BM, MT, Emerson, etc. exists.

The handle is designed so that it can be used "choked up" for normal utility work and for extremely strong retention or held further aft for longer reach for slicing.

IMHO the Gunting offers more options than a typical knife for self defense but much more training is required to get the full value.

The Military is a heavy duty rated knife. But the Chinook and the Gunting are MBC rated knives. That means they have the strongest locks available. Spyderco makes only three models MBC rated. (The third one is the Lil'Temperance).
If you preffer a heftier knife, that is the Chinook.
The 3" blade of the Gunting is suitable for regular cutting chores as well as for knife fighting. Note that usually in a conflict you don't need to kill your adversary rather than repell him and for this even a Cricket or a Ladybug can do.

Maybe Spyderco produced it so it could be legal almost anywhere in USA = sold almost anywhere in USA.

I´d like to suggest a search. You will find old discussions about this matter.

The whole point of the Gunting imho is simplicity and ethics. The Gunting is not a complicated tool to use. Yes u do need a little training to use it but it is not rocket science. Blade length as others have stated keeps it legal in most places. One of the best features of the Gunting is that u don't even have to open the blade to defend yourself. You don't have to cut anybody, so you can be seen to be using restraint and this is easier to justify in court. It will depend on the level of threat you are facing and when you decided to open it. But if you do, this blade is very capable. Just reach out and touch somebody.
