Why the term "User"?

Why does the term User get added to certain knives in the exchange section, or in conversation. I'm guessing it indicates a knife that gets "used" as an every carry/use situation... and thats as opposed to... a $400 knife that never sees the light of day? A safe queen?

Its almost like these knives are assumed to be pretty status symbols, and its not the norm to actually use them. I'd think it would make more sense if people specified "collector" or "pristine" and hard use was expected on everything else. I'm just of the utilitarian mindset where sure, I paid $400 for a knife, but that means I can expect $400 performance. I'll beat the piss out of something until I've gotten every last drop of use out of it.

Dont some of you guys with 20-30+ Busse knives have some level of guilt on your conscience for not using such marvels of engineering? :D

No I think its just a generic term it was "used" sometimes gets used. A "user" falls along the same lines as "used". But "used" in of itself vary's greatly. I can use a knife to cut some paper and cardboard and therefore it was "used" as appose to sitting on the shelf. Then again I could have used it to smash crates and baton firewood and what not. Mainly I see it as a very generic term that varys greatly.

I do have some knives that sit unused as they just dont fit into my rotation. Busse's are fixed blades and i only have so many opportunities to use my fixed blades anyway. Many people buy multiples and have "safe queens" just to have. Or they buy a Busse thats unique that they just like to have even if they dont plan on using it. I guess you can call them "collectors" or "prestine" if you'd like that term.

I dont see Busse's as status symbols, I use almost all of mine except a very small few which I just havent gotten around too. Others own alot that never see any work....but they enjoy owning them and thats fine too.

Well, in a for sale situation, the seller wants to let the buyer know that the knife has been used, so that the buyer isn't expecting a "pristine" knife.

Some guys have some that they use, and some just collect, we all love knives, and it's all good.

Honestly though, if, for whatever reason, I decided to collect 10 different color variations of one particular knife, what would be the purpose of scratching and beating up every single one of them? Couldn't hurt to keep a couple in excellent condition in case you need to sell one some day.

I use mine, but I only have a couple. If, someday, I have 20 or 30 I doubt I'll use every single one. Some of them would be just for collectors purposes.

I feel ya - there are a LOT of people who own nothing but safe queen knives, and won't buy anything but a perfect and pristine knife.

If given the choice, I would personally prefer to buy a user, especially if it has a really awesome sharp edge on it. I'm going to beat on it anyway, so I don't care what the coating looks like, as long as it can do the job it's supposed to do.

I've seen just as many threads where people who bought safe queens, kept them as safe queens and are selling them as safe queens specify in their sale threads that the knife is unused, unsharpened and in exactly the same condition as it arrived from the factory. (And charge a premium of course, but IMO collectors are funny.)

Which would make you think that all other knives are assumed to be users.

Well until you read those other threads. :)

People are just being clear- nothing wrong with better communication.

Yep, no one wants my high street because it's been sharpened. It definitely felt unsharpened when I picked it up at BLADE ;)

I know if I had the choice of grabbing a knife with a 35 degree edge geometry, or having someone else do the work to thin it out for me, I'd choose the latter. I went out and bought a belt sander because the first thing I was doing with most of my Bussekin knives was to sharpen them up, and it was taking forever by hand.

I wish I could charge a premium for sharpening them :D :D

I agree with you MustardMan I prefer to buy users, they are already scuffed or prime for a new edge which I tend to give my knives anyway so I feel better about doing it. Most of my Busse's are heavily used so I like getting one that already has character. Unfortunatley not as many used blades come up for sale as it does depreciate the value of them.

OH I DO want your High Street. Been wanting one of those, just waiting for the Waki to get paid for an all the other goodies before I can persue other things.

One of my fav Busse's is my Culti because someone took the time to put a SCREAMING edge on it. So now I merely touch it up. Perfect EDC fixed blade that was already well taken care of.....now if I can find the darn :othing:grumpy:

Ain't that the truth - I keep hoping for a good deal on a beaten-to-hell Battle Rat, but I never see one. I wonder why :p

I get really excited when I see the word "user" in the title of a for-sale thread.

Oh sure. I'm not implying any judgment. Just an observation really.

That’s kind of my point right there though. Why would I buy 10 different variations of anything I didn't plan on using? You're right, it would be silly to just beat them all up unnecessarily. If you're hording a bunch to keep unused, just in case you want to sell them, you're turning an excellent tool into more of a collectable, or symbol. Again, just opinions. Not preaching.

Haha... yeah, the value of it as a collectable maybe. I don't value something I paid a lot of money for, but never use as its intended purpose. If you're never going to use it, what value does it have? It might as well be a wool sock, or a rubber ball... or some other inanimate object.

People always call me crazy because my Tacoma truck is always muddy, and has brush marks and I take it through the woods and beat on it. It continues to run like a tank though. What value would it hold as a truck, if I used it as a lounge chair with head lights? Hmmm... that actually sounds interesting.:D

Don't get me wrong. I understand "to each his own". I'm not trying to spark an argument.

I completely understand the idea of collecting something of value. I just think its funny when its specifically marked "user"... Like "Yes... I actually use this $400 knife" as if someone would be surprised it actually gets use.

Allright enough with the words, where's the pics?
Lets see some pics of your Busse users adrock!!

You know rich people aren't 'crazy' they're 'eccentric'?

You know how hoarding is a sign of mental illness? Well when rich people do it, it isn't 'hoarding' it's 'collecting'.

When you save your own poop in ziplock bags because you can't part with it that's *definitely* hoarding, but when you start feeling the urge to build sets of things (it doesn't really matter sets of what, the sets can be of anything) we're nice and call it collecting, so long as those things are something someone else might want to buy.

I'm mostly joking. :)

Edit: Removed. It was funny, but just not appropriate. Posted link to hilarious but nasty story in W&C.

Ok, I just read through some of the information links pinned at the top of the forum. I read through the description and meaning of Hogs and Infi Hogs and its all much clearer to me. Although admittedly I dont own a busse "yet" and only own one SRKW... I think I may just fit in well. It was only weeks ago that I said I'd never buy another fixed blade knife after seeing my M6. Now... I'm almost ready to close a deal on an ASH.

My milk almost shot through my nose when I read about HOGs that will hide new knives from wives... have them shipped to other locations, and even go as far as claiming new knives are in fact knives they've owned for years.

When my M6 came in the mail, I instinctively told my wife "Its my cousins... he just didn't have Paypal, so he couldn't receive it himself." :D

I had Steelnut make me a kydex sheath, and asked him to deliver it and my M6 to my brother so again, my wife wouldn't see yet another package ariving.

I think I'm begining to understand... :)
