Why the term "User"?

Let us not forget the Term "Beater Knife" that is possibly a step or two past "User"

If I have smacked the knife with a Hammer, if I have thrown the knife and had it hit rocks or Cement, if I have bent the knife and then Straightened it out, these are "Beater Knives"

Users have "Scuffs in the Finish.

Beaters may have no finish left, and might have rust/chips/dings.

Users and Beaters usually have Sheaths.

Many Busse knives only get Rubbed with a Soft Cloth(Diaper)Safe Queens, Factory Fresh, unsharpened(no factory sheaths for the last 5 or 6 years)

In the end, User to me means that in normal use you are not likely to lower the value of the knife, because it has already been used.

I am more of a Knife Accumulator than a knife Collector.

Ok, I just read through some of the information links pinned at the top of the forum. I read through the description and meaning of Hogs and Infi Hogs and its all much clearer to me. Although admittedly I dont own a busse "yet" and only own one SRKW... I think I may just fit in well. It was only weeks ago that I said I'd never buy another fixed blade knife after seeing my M6. Now... I'm almost ready to close a deal on an ASH.

My milk almost shot through my nose when I read about HOGs that will hide new knives from wives... have them shipped to other locations, and even go as far as claiming new knives are in fact knives they've owned for years.

When my M6 came in the mail, I instinctively told my wife "Its my cousins... he just didn't have Paypal, so he couldn't receive it himself." :D

I had Steelnut make me a kydex sheath, and asked him to deliver it and my M6 to my brother so again, my wife wouldn't see yet another package ariving.

I think I'm begining to understand... :)

Yeah the story guys could tell about keeping infi purchases quiet. I myself have told my g/f's that I have had that knife or I "traded" for it. I have had them shipped to work to bypass my wenches. My current GF loves Longaberger baskets and other stuff so she understands quality and buying things because you like them. So I have lucked out with her sooooooo far. Though I never encourage lying to anyones significant other. Getting creative with the truth when it comes to Busse Kin knive seems to be a standard thing.

OH pull the trigger on that ASH, I am sure you'll like it. Skinny or Regular? I have bought many a knife and said "wow this is it I dont need any more its just what I need" and then a month later Jerry, his brother or someone else comes out with "something I NEED".

My fiance and I have a working agreement - my knives get paid directly out of my paycheck, and she knows better than to ask what they cost, while I know better than to tell her what they cost. It works out beautifully.

Your training goes well, young grasshopper.

It's a beautiful thing when your relationship evolves to this point, which is pretty much where I am now.

I think it's fair for sellers to describe a knife in as clear a way as they know how. People here generally know what a user is, like Papathud pointed out - generally a beater is used (not like new condition) but does not show signs of severe abuse (which is hard to do on a Busse in the first place).

Buy what ya like, sell what ya like however you feel like selling it, and above all have fun.

you know something, not everyone has a lot of money, and they really look up to Busse and have to save and save to get one, so if after saving for six months or so, so then can get their dream FFBM or whatnot, it's hard to go and hack at a stupid tree with it, they might put in on display on a shelf or whatnot.
To some, Busse are holy grails knives to begin with. At first before I knew about Busse, I and found out what people were paying for them and what not, I thought everyone was crazy, back when I was thinking sypdercos and benchmade knives were really expensive...
It's like if someone went and was able to obtain a 71 ornigal Hemi Cuda converitible, and use it as a daily driver, well that would just be a sin. So if people want to only admire and look at their Busse, they can do that. They know what it can do, you don't need to use them to know that. Isn't knowing enough?

Isn't knowing enough?

Knowing is half the battle.

I guess it all depends on your reason and intent when you buy the knife. To me, value comes from how well an item performs doing what it was made to do. If you never intend to use it, what does it matter how well you "think" it can do it. It might as well be any other cheap knife. If I went out and bought said Cuda, I'd probably hammer it down some country road every week. If I threw a rod, or blew a gasket, I'd still have more appreciation for the car and it's value would be more to me, knowing I used it. Sure it might depreciate because of the hard use, but I'm not concerned with resale, or someone elses impression of value.

Its like Baseball cards, or Barbie Dolls or any other collectable. They're only worth what someone is willing to pay, if or when you sell it. Otherwise its not worth anything sitting in a box. Except what its worth to you... I'd rather get MY worth out of something without any real concern for its value when I turn around to sell it.

I'm not questioning the meaning of "user". I realize its a descriptive word used to indicate the condition of the knife to a potential buyer. I'm just surprised there is as big of a collectable component to these tough ass knives, as there is a usuable one.

There are collectible components to almost any brand of knives. Add in the limited numbers of each release, and the limited time over which they are available, plus a mysterious and cool-sounding steel, unbeatable warranty, and near-legendary status of the company, and you've got a recipe for a serious collectible.

I'm not at all surprised that people keep their Busse's pristine and put them in a safe. It's not MY style, but I can see the appeal. INFI is a far better investment than my 401k :thumbdn:

I DO sometimes wish there were fewer collectors and more users... especially when it comes to knives like the Mojo/MoFo series. MAN, would I love to see a listing titled "Uncle MoFo user - cheap!"... :D

Yeah, I hear that. Its the only way I'm gonna score an ASH.... and they're not even that expensive relative to some other Busse's I've seen.

Buying Busse for me is considering as an "upgrade" of my tools , the more you use as daily wood job , you will see the quality tools will keep your job done faster and more durable with less maintaince. ofcos , the name "Busse" did contribute 50% of my ego to owing it .

...so if I have a fighter Busse, I should take it out and fight people with it to be sure it works well? If I know martial arts, I should beat people up to make sure I know it works? Or is knowing I can defend myself if need be enough? Isn't knowing that if I need my busse will perform it's job should I need to use it enough?

"User" means just that...its been used a good bit, so now its a user.

Knife collecting has been a life long pleasure of mine.
Joined my local knife club when I was in high school, and I'm 48 now.

Nothing wrong with collecting knives. I and many others find great pleasure in it. IMO it sure beats stamps, coins, watches, etc...
And like someone above said, it sure beats the stock market as of late...I juts sold a rare D'Holder for $2000 that I paid $500 for less than 10 years ago.

Most of my knives will never get used. The 20 or so users I do have is plenty.
I've almost quit buying anything lately though unless I plan to use it,(economy/divorce slowed me down a good bit).

yeah I remember the box of Dholders I bought for $3k:):) Wish I could find that deal everyday:D

WHen you buy 6 knives for $3k, and two folders sell at auction out of it for $3600, and you still have 4 knives left:eek::eek:

You know you did something, and its funny how the wife stops fussing about all the purchases.

Well no. I see your point. I do have "collectable knives", and I have a knife collection. Most are knives I've used before and no longer use though. If I knew a martial art, I would practice though. I would get more satisfaction out of performing the act, rather than knowing the act can be performed. Personally.

Thats where I'm at.(minus the divorce) I have one or two knives that will never get used, but when I buy a knife, I'm spending my money on a tool that I'll get use out of, and may some day be a collectable.

...its really just a matter of money. I have plenty of other crap I spent my money on that will never get used. If Jerry said "Here is free BM, do not use it... it is a collectable". I'd happily oblige. :D

Bottom line is, if you spend the money, you can do whatever you want with your blades.

Collect, use, fondle; all are acceptable.

I am more fond of users, but there is something to be said for "just" owning them. I gotta admit, it is nice to look behind the bedroom door and see the Zilla peeking out from behind the MOAB, both of which are lying on top of the FBM (.288), SFNO, NMSFNO, SOD, & Regulator which are all lying on top of the box that I keep the BAD, Rat Shaker, & Rat Warden in. The AK kept falling off, so it's propped up in the corner. All of them have been used. The M9 & the Custom Shop Cultie I'm saving for a special occasion.

If I could get the IDPA monkey off my back, I'd have more time to spend with the INFI...

Ideally, we'd all be able to buy two of each model, one to use and one to put in the safe. I'm trying this with the Waki, but one has G10 and one micarta, so I may have to use them both.

The INFI bug has definitely curtailed my firearms purchases. INFI is much cheaper to feed, and almost always holds it's value better.
