Why was the Sebenza 21 discontinued?

Don't have an inkosi, but I do have an Umnumzaan with the ceramic ball and I've used that thing hard over 10 years with no issue.

I know I know...probably over thinking it. But coming from the TriAd lock, hopefully I get credit for trying a framelock! I actually would have liked to keep both, but just couldn't justify it.

More guessing here. The more commonality between different models the more streamlined production is and less Ti warranty claims. The blade is disposal so wear out or replace that instead of Ti and have customers flip the bill since the blade's a wear item.

31 inlays are rather nice and a throwback to older CRKs.

Why did they discontinue it?

Simple.

Because they hate people who didn’t own one, but always wanted to own one, until it was too late.

Yeah.

Nasty, what can I say?

:p

Been away from the site for awhile. New son got married moved states. Im not a huge fan of the sebenza 31 inlays. Is there a reason the 21 was put out to pasture?

The son and ex-wife had to lift their leg on the ole man’s masterpiece. A story as old as humans. Oh and new models mean another Sebenza sold to OCD collectors thus more sales and $ for the investors :)

I haven’t been participating too much in the 21/31 discussions anymore. Seems like whenever I give my thoughts, someone decides to send me not nice PM’s.

However, I’m going to start participating as a CRK collector, user, and appreciater. These are just my thoughts.

The changes to the 31 from the 21 are, ceramic lockbar interface, canted pocket clip, and new inlay shape. The locating hole has been removed from the PJ 31 only, they still remain underneath the inlay versions that I have held. (20+)
Whether or not the move to the ceramic lockup is to save money or to speed up production, I do not know...however, as a business decision, it would make sense.

Brownshoe here has hit on more my way of thinking...
CRK hadn’t changed their inlay materials on the 21’s in quite some time, and when they did, they opted to keep the box elder, and add bog oak and stripped platen. The first, box elder, has been around a long time, and in my opinion needs to be retired. Also, in my opinion only, the stripped platen is ugly, and there is nothing special about the bog oak, especially comparing to the inlays we have seen in the past.
The new inlays that were introduced, red linen and CF were given away as exclusives, and therefore, they were difficult to aquire.

I think that the market has been flooded with 21’s and the sales for them at corporate level had dropped...secondary market still being on fire tho, but CRK makes no money there.

The inkosi was released quite relatively recent (compared to the sebenza), and people started buying those and loving the ceramic lockup on the inkosi...and commenting on the smoothness.
As Inkosi sales climbed and 21 sales dropped, possibly, CRK latched on to the notion that if they added the canted clip and ceramic lockup then their would be more demand for the Sebenza again at a corporate level.
However, as a collector/user of 21’s, I personally dont like the ceramic lockup, hence only one Inkosi in my collection. I personally prefer the ti lockup and therefore, stay away from the 31’s.

Just my thoughts...and all non proven.

Edit: for spelling

I believe I know you well enough as a contributor here to know you don't agree with this part old brownshoe's deliberately insulting and inflammatory statement:
The son and ex-wife had to lift their leg on the ole man’s masterpiece.
Or are we to believe brownshoe here when he says CRK changed the Sebenza in order to urinate all over Chris's legacy? :D

I do agree that changing up a design is a way to stay in business and make more money, which is the point of the whole endeavor, isn't it?

I know there is some controversy around aspects of the 31. Me personally? I don't like the new inlay pattern and I don't like the idea of owning a CRK without an inlay. So I'll just keep to the Large 21 Micarta I have but I wish the folks at CRK, and all the fans, luck with the new 31s....

You are correct. I forgot to edit that out of the quote. I’ll fix it now.

People were bitching and moaning about about how the 21 needed to be changed because it was an old design that was boring. They retired the 21 and introduced the 31. It ain’t boring any longer, but it hasn’t stopped the bitching and moaning either.
