Why we should always remember the fundamentals

I'm just curious now. Whenever i hear or read about knife safety tips, the first thing that pops up, is: Never cut towards yourself (or others.)
And generally, i think that it's a really good idea. But as an avid whittler, i find that some times, the only good grip for certain whittling, is to hold the knife in the hand, and press towards my thumb. Ofcourse, i never use the pressure of my thumb on the workpiece as the cutting force, so that might be what causes me confusion. Instead i use the thumb as a sort of a stabilizing stop-point, and just clench my fist as the cutting force.
So... I guess in a sense i don't cut towards myself, even though i do? In fact, in certain whittling projects, it might be more dangerous to cut away from yourself, than it is to employ controlled... Clench-fist-cuts with the thumb as a stabilizing stop-point.

Anyone know what i'm on about, or should i just shut up now? :D
