Why would anyone carry a fixed-blade?

I disagree that a folder is more comfortable to carry. to the contrary, my fixed blades are often more comfortable, unless they're huge, folders can be a pain, they're certainly more of a pain to get out. I like folders, but they're a compromise, if our society wasn't so uptight I don't know if I'd even own one.

say your job is to open boxes frequently, a folding knife would have to be opened, the task performed, closed, then placed back in the pocket, whereas a fixed blade would consist of unsheath, cut, resheath. Just a tad bit more convenient.

I've been wondering about this. I have carried folders clipped to my pocket ever since I found my first knife with a clip over almost 20 years ago. All of my EDC knives now are one-hand so I can pull them out, open them, cut, close them and clip them back in my pocket quickly with one hand. With a fixed blade the pulling out is the same amount of time, there is no opening although I basically open the knife as it is moving towards its job, and then you put the knife back. The closing of the folder is the part that takes the most time for me, but with a fixed blade you have to get it back into its sheath and you either need 2 hands for that or you have to go slowly. I had a friend that lived in a rural area and carried a fixed blade EDC with a leather sheath on his belt. He would put his index finger along the blade, use his fingertip to find the top of the sheath, and then he could put the knife in without looking at it and with only one hand. But anyway I don't think there is a lot of difference in the convenience of a good one-hand folder and a fixed blade.

Fixed blades ARE better than folders in every way except compactness & possibly convenience.

No we wouldn't. Some of us like to be able to sit comfortably in an office chair.

If you have a compact Finnish Puukko with a dangler sheath you CAN and DO sit comfortably in a car seat or any seat for that matter. No handle digging in your ribs! As for knife retention, try upending one and shaking it. The Puukko stays in place until you need it. The reactions of others in an office environment, is of course another matter:D:eek:

I just get bored with my folders. I like variety in my knives as i'm sure many knife collectors do. So if i'm not going to school, work, the mall, etc... I will sometimes carry a fixed blade. I don't need it, but like how cars are a big part of my friends life. Knives are a big part of mine.
