Why Would Chris Reeve DO This???

Eric :

Have you used S30V yet ...

No, I have no interest in it as a blade steel. For small knives S90V offers better edge retention directly because of higher hardness and wear resistance, and for larger impact blades 3V is directly better as would even 1084 unless you wanted high wear resistance for multi-purpose use, a one blade is all type of rig.

It would seem to be a very nice steel for those who like the abilities of ATS-34 and want an upgrade without having to pay the much greater cost for S90V as its machinability is very low and it is hard to polish. As for those makers describing it as very tough, the same people say the same thing about ATS-34, so the baseline for "tough" in that relative description isn't very high.

Phil Wilson is using it in light hunters, skinner and fillet knives and it would seem to be great there as noted the cost for ATS-34 -> S90V is high so S30V is a nice stepping stone.

I do have a blade coming from it as I will admit the hype does bring some interest, but it is being done as a favor from a maker who is very busy so I don't expect it any time soon.

are you making these claims based on the specs sheet and thrid and fourth hand claims?

First off, I reference in the above exactly what I was basing the statements on, secondly the spec sheets from Crucible are direct materials testing, "claims" is hardly an appropriate term, of course when such reports are being used as promotion such labeling is never used. Simonichs report was written by himself on Bladeforums so its hardly a third or fourth hand either, as well I have discussed it with Wilson directly.

Back to the bar :

I did the tension bar chopping with the A2 and Ti MPK last night. The handles were hell for shock, I could only do about 12 hits and then I had to stop. The edge on the A2 blade completed fractured away, to about a mm deep, but I had it reground to less than a 20 degree included angle, so that was to be expected. The Ti edge at a more obtuse angle impacted much more readily, 2-3 times as much, again as expected given the much lower RC.

I then gave each blade another dozen hits using a well padded glove. it was impossible to cut through the metal as the edge was completely removed in the impact area, but the knives were not harmed as a whole. The Ti blade would not be able to do this even with the NIB angle, as it is too soft, however the A2 blade probably would. I'll regrind a section of it to a 45 degree included angle and try it later on.
