Do YOU delete the price of your knife after you sell it? Are you embarrassed by the selling price?
You yourself know that if you want to sell a particular knife, you might try and do a little research and see what others have sold the same for. Maybe just to get a rough idea.
I don't really expect anybody to reply to this thread. I just want to ask that you leave the price up long after the sale has been made.
I thank you as I step off my soapbox. :)

Is it really that hard to figure out the price YOU are comfortable paying for or receiving for a knife? I personally don't need a sale from 3 months ago to dictate the amount I want or will pay.YMMV.

I never understand why people need to have other people help them decide on the buy or sell price of an item. Can you not make that call yourself?

And how do you know a listed price is what it sold for?

Some of the blades I am interested in have been all over the map, and sold. We are talking 30-55% off list. All sold. Some I bought but I wouldn't speculate at the price payed by others.

Decide how much you want for your own stuff. It might be quite different than what other people ask for the same stuff.

I use prices I find in the exchange as references to where I end up placing my sale prices, but I also use prices I find at online retailers from Amazon to Ebay to all the big supporting dealers like BHQ and KC. I never rely on prices on the exchange but I do find a little use in them when I find them.

I used to delete the sale prices in my threads because others did it, then I figure if anybody wanted to use my sales threads as a guide to price their knives then some buyer should get a good deal on a knife because I try to price my knives as close to a great deal as I feel is reasonable.

You know, I do use the big river site if it's a production knife. It doesn't matter what I paid for something if somebody can buy it for 20 bucks less on the big river site.
And yes, I would like the know what others have sold for here. I don't want to get ripped and I don't want to RIP somebody else off.

Check the baseline on Northwoods from Knives Ship Free. As soon as they sell out (estimated 6 minutes) all the data gets pulled off the site.

I have never see that happen with other production knives. Perhaps that is the exception.

If a knife costs $200 new, and someone sells their used one for $150 4 months ago, am I ripping someone off if I list it today for $175 and it sells? I say no. The buyer and I have both agreed to the worth of the knife at that time.

I think the first post in a sales thread should lock within 15 minutes to allow for an edit but then it's set in stone including that asking price.

The seller can adjust the price if they want when they're allowed in the thread bumps. That would shut down the folks who for lack of a better word fidget with threads in the exchange.

Ok, i get how this pertains to the thread yet fail to see how it addresses anything said in my post you quoted.

I think you're taking this too personally. That current fiasco is about as bad as it gets but there are other users that do the same without getting the same attention. The latest one just feels she has permission to do a she pleases.

It's been noted before the asking price is posted in the clear. The actual sale price is between the buyer and seller. No one wants this to be an excuse to pry into another members life. Merely for it to be a yardstick to refer to.

Didn't we have a thread on this just a couple weeks ago this is a dead horse that gets beaten on every couple months. I don't agree with the practice but I can't control it either.

Nothing personal here.* You quoted my post and your response was referring to something completely different. That confused me is all.

*Ok, perhaps a small fib there. I'd say my first post would qualify. This topic gets rehashed every few months and i felt a little snark coming through in the OP and i responded in kind. Oops. For my subsequent posts, nope.

Yeah don't wake the sleeping dog. My opinion just comes from the way other spots run their classifieds. It was earlier that 80% of the users of any system stay within the lines and 20% game the system. If you make the system too strict though you just wind up making exponentially more work for the mods and admin.

Some of the very desirable stuff has very little info available and that feeds the flippers. It shouldn't mean that an honest seller can't put something at the market price and come out ahead of MSRP if that's the market.

And I know there's a sub issue with some folks who'll contact buyers way after the fact and pester them.

I don't know if there's a perfect system. I don't buy a lot of stuff on the exchange and I don't sell but it seems for some users that is a big feature of the site.

I guess the two schools of thought boil down to:

  • Removing the price keeps people from seeing old, out of date prices on knives where the value may have changed significantly.
  • Leaving the price allows for "market research" when selling or buying a knife.
I lean toward the second idea, and I am good with being able to see if a thread is 2 months old or 2 years old.

I like information and enjoy when this forum has valuable information like current selling prices for popular knives. I don't trust everything on Ebay as I believe those are inflated prices from dealers trying to make margin off of their sales, whereas I believe that most sales HERE are knife people trying to turn over their knives and not making a living off of said sales.

Just an opinion. Incidentally, I was here looking at prices for a couple knives I am getting ready to put up for sale here. Many sales threads had the prices removed, several did not. Consider which were more helpful for my purpose. Ebay prices were significantly inflated over what I found here, by the way.

Yes there was a thread 3 or 4 weeks ago and probably 3 or 4 weeks before that too plus I agree it's a Dead Horse. I don't like it myself but but I understand that is a private sale and sellers can do as they please. If one really wants to gage the price of a knife than you can do some research the river or Fleabay for princess and work from their. It's all about doing research but Sheeple have become so dependant on other people doing all the work for them it drives me crazy meanwhile they are standing there with a computer in their hands (Phone) connected to the vast knowledge of the Internet spending hours checking up on their Likes on Facebook. Everyone loves a good deal but like J.P. Morgan said "If you have to ask how much something costs than you can't afford it."

I'm sorry but it's my turn to beat on it awhile. Also, I know all the beating in the world isn't going to change anything. I guess I just wanted to get it out there.
