Why?????

Why do you care? If they are not bothering you than why does it matter?

Everyone is allowed to have a rant now and then, yes even Dougo;)

My petpieve is people talking on the cell phones using a hands free device, and not driving. They're not holding anything, but they're too damn lazy to hold the phone so people around them think they're the ones being spoken to. Drives me nut:mad: Rant over

Sorry back to topic:o

Maybe people would be nicer to others if they wouyld not isolate themselves from reality by tuning out the world.

Just a thought, but maybe mountain lions have started attacking people because they are sick of having to listen to all that crappy music? The big cats are not really going for the heads, just the headphones!

I thought "MP3" on my pack meant "Military Pocket, 3rd generation".

:D:D:D

I have brought my MP3 when we do car camping...a little Enya and my pipe by the fire is pretty relaxing, but I do agree that the reason you get away from the urban chaos is to enjoy nature, the sounds, smells and sights.

Us the MP3 pockets to your advantage...great place to put a small camera or PSK:thumbup:

For myself, getting to the wilderness often means taking a bus or train trip first. While I would never want to listen to an MP3 player in the bush, I can't imagine being without one on a long bus ride. Once I get to my destination, I like having designated spots in / on my pack for an MP3 and cell phone, simply because it keeps them organized. Those things aren't cheap! But they are small, and easy to lose.

Anyway, I imagine that a few of the people listening to MP3 players one bumps into on the trail are playing something like "Relaxing Sounds of Nature", completely oblivious to the relaxing sounds of nature all around. :D

All the best,

Doug,

I think you need to realize that different people go into the wilderness for different reasons. For example, a birder might want an mp3 player with bird songs of different species; s/he may want to listen to a particular bird call to make a positive ID of a bird that was just heard. An ultra-endurance athlete may just be blowing through the wilderness for a hard workout, and may want to blast some tunes that help to get "amped". Some folks go to the wilderness to relax; others go there to work.

Personally, while I enjoy time in nature, I also spend a lot of my days of hard work on the job in nature, and... because I spend a lot of time outside... I'm not necessarily feeling the need to retreat from civilization nor trying to do that, when I'm outdoors.

Not everyone is there for the same reasons you are, and there's nothing necessarily illegitimate about other people's reasons.

By the way, keep in mind that those "pockets for mp3 players" are really pockets for mp3 players and/or cell phones and/or GPS devices and/or PLBs, and so on. For example, my phone is also a PDF file reader with all of my instruction manuals for my camera gear; plus it's an mp3 player, and a TV, and a radio, and a pseudo-GPS, and a tide calculator, and a depth of field calculator, and a sunrise/sunset-moonrise/moonset time and location calculator, and a video recorder, and a video player, and a still camera, and so on.

+1 on this post. As much as I personally dislike having electronic distractions on my person, other people may have decent reasons for doing so. As long as they're not bothering me (radio blaring, blabbering on the phone constantly) it's not a big deal. And if I really want to get away, I'll go somewhere these people don't, and that's that for that.

I will say that I do carry a cell phone on me during short hikes in case of emergency. In areas where you do get reception it can be a lifesaver, and to deprive yourself of this very useful tool (where it will work) is not very smart, in my opinion. Some phones, as mentioned, have a lot of features built-in that are very useful. Plus, if you're a loser like me, nobody will call you anyway so you don't have to worry about it ringing. :D

While I'm not about to listen to music while hiking my MP3 player is loaded with the "Petersons Birds of North America" CD's.

If I want to identify a bird by it's song I can listen to them.

I don't own an MP3 but carry my cell for emergencies(hey it has ringtones!! LOL)... but only handfull of people have my number so it rarely rings and it does have a power button...

I do not own any sort of Ipod or mp3 player or a cell phone.

I don't own a dishwasher either and have 1 window air conditioner.;)

I do not own a MP3 or I-pod so no worries there but I do pack my Cell, short hike it is on but if I am camping or ETC it is still packed but powered off....very few have my cell number so no worries of it constantly ringing or my Blabbing on it...
