Another thing you might try is hockey tape. It's a cloth tape with good grippiness, one or 2 layers depending how much compressibility you want. The one I saw recommended was Howies hockey tape but I couldn't find that as a single roll so I just bought a roll of Proguard hockey tape off amazon, about $5 for a roll. You can re-use it so you get a lot of life from a roll.
