Hi Guys, I'm new here so I would like to say Hi to everyone. Then I would like to ask what you people thenk of the Wicked Edge Machine. It's a bit pricey I think ,but how dose it work if at all ? Any Info is met with Thanks Guys.Malan

I would do a search on "Wicked Edge" in this section of the forum. There has been a lot written on it.

I'm a huge fan of it.

I love WE and have given many to friends and family as gifts. I really can't say enough good things about them. They are spendy but you truly do get what you pay for.

I sharpen freehand, and hate any sharpening rig that makes you clamp the blade, or anything else that slows me down from getting it done.

That said, it is a quality product and made in the USA.

The are good for two types of people:

1. Those who lack the confidence or skills to sharpen freehand.

2. Those so anal that they have to have full control over every aspect of an operation as simple as sharpening a knife so that they can be assured the are at a 32 degree inclusive edge or whatever angle they want, and post pictures of cutting hairs in half on the internet.

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

I don't see any reason to be passive aggressive or to insult someone's preference for sharpening a knife. I have tried freehand. In fact I have several hundred dollars invested in quality flat stones of various qualities and materials but it best and quickest results are from the Wicked Edge.

I'm not denying that my skills are lacking but while getting into sharpening I felt most comfortable with a system over freehand. Some day when I have more free time to invest in that skill I will but until then being able to sit down and mirror finish a knife that is shaving sharp in about an hour is very satisfying.

Like I say, I respect your ability to freehand but you should respect other people's abilities as well. We are here with a common interest not to put others down who don't share your opinion.

If I miss read the post I apologize. I just don't want the OP or anyone else reading this thread to be lead to believe one is less worthy of the other. Both have their place and should earn equal respect.

I love my WE. I have around $500 invested. Yikes! But Id do it all again. These days I use it for setting the bevel on knives and also for big repairs. Most of my touchups are done on my Sharpmaker. The SM is much faster and easier to setup for quick touchups compared to the WE. The thing I love most about the WE is the repeatability. I keep a file with data on every knife I sharpen with the WE so I know exactly what angle for each side and what position to clamp the blade. I recommend an angle cube for setting angles.

There is no "passive-aggressive" here. Freehand sharpening is a skill....it takes time and effort to learn it.

ANY clamped system does not take skill, per se, it takes ability to follow instructions.....I was simply pointing out the difference...it takes me between five and ten minutes sharpening freehand to get a knife as sharp as it needs to be.

The OP asked about the system and I chimed in with my thoughts.....you cannot be insulted unless you wish to be.

I like mine sharper than they need to be. :-)

i would recommend an edge pro apex, DMT stones for touch ups, or sharpmaker. i never tried the wicked edge. Also, it may be that, but there is a ken onion product out that is good for sharpening as well, that is sort of a belt sander/grinder.

I got a W.E. And Sharon pros stones. I use the stones for kitchen knives and not so important user knives. I haven't taken my skills to the a level that is exceptional for me yet. So with my higher end knives I use the W.E. Not just to get a mirror polish and as sharp as possible, I tend to flip my higher end knives. Resale is better with a better edge. Also use strops and sharp maker for touch up. But I do love the wicked edge. And it does take some learning to get it good, but no where near freehand.

Well, coincidentally I just sharpened my ZT0300 on my Wicked Edge (literally 15 minutes ago).

Here's a pic:

I sharpened it up to a 0.5 micro strop, and it tree tops hair with ease. I've had may Wicked Edge for about a month now, and I've sharpened around 20 knives. I cannot recommend the system enough (if you can afford it). The first knife I sharpened was shaving sharp, and since then I've only improved (mainly in getting more consistent bevels). I bought the Pro Pack II, and I personally love it.

I say don't listen to these people who call sharpening systems a "Gimmick" or "Non-Traditional". All that I care about is the results. I can get a moderately sharp edge freehanding, but a system like the Wicked Edge takes all the guess work out of it and inspires confidence. If someone wants to sharpen freehand, power to them. But just because I can get identical or better results using a guided system does not make me inferior in any way, which seems to be how some people see it.

"Gimmick: A trick or device intended to attract attention, publicity, or business"

Guided systems are not a gimmick, because they achieve excellent results.

P.S. Sorry for the bad picture, my phone can't take very good macro.

I'm new here as well (Hello gents) and I bought a WE last year after a month of research on the WE vs. Edge Pro. I went with the WE due to the fact it clamped the blade and I have several blades with a stonewash or DLC finish I did not want rubbing back and forth in the dust created when sharpening (Edge Pro setup). This might have been a non issue, but nonetheless I went with the WE and am VERY happy with it. Happy enough I take it to my parents house on holidays and sharpen their kitchen knives. I don't think you could go wrong with either system. There is a Wicked Edge forum which might have some extra info to help you decide.

I found out after the purchase - It is made in China. According to the owner in the recent past, they are trying to find companies in the US, if, a big if, that can charge WE reasonably to produce same products.

Furthermore, it has a lot of quality control issues, reports even in the WEP's own forum.

I am one that is experiencing their resolution right now, that is, after my report, they were to send two sets of replacement. I only received one of the two. My new replacement set was worst than the one I had, sent back, that was over a month ago.

Hey Victor, we're actually have some luck these days getting stuff moved to the US. We've got the plant in Vermont making a lot of stuff for us and we're working with another in Tennessee to start production in mid 2015. It's very slow going though so I'm not sure how long it will take to get everything out of China. Originally it seemed like making them there was our only option since we started right before the recession hit and we were too small for US companies to take interest. In hindsight, it was a mistake that continues to create problems. Even now, we have a shipment that's been stuck for months because of the protests in Hong Kong and another that spent over a month on the boat off of Long Beach because of issues with the truckers and longshoremen there. On the other front, I'm not sure what happened that the replacement 50/80 stones didn't get to you but I've got Kyle looking into it this morning. He'll be in touch by email and be sure to get you squared away.

Looks like the customer service just improved ten/fold:surprise:

Nope... it's always been like that :) I like the fact that Clay doesn't try to cover anything up about where stuff is made and just lays it out there for everyone to see... very honorable IMHO. Also nice they are moving stuff to US, however, I totally understand the production cost issue which is why it was done in the first place. Good stuff!

I just placed a wicked edge pro pack 1 from Baldy's Sharpener. I am new to sharpening as well and give you an update after some use. Baldy's customer service was stellar. I can't wait until it arrives. After countless research it really does look like the ideal sharpening system. After having a sharpmaker (phenomenal system as well) I definitely wanted to upgrade.

Clay's YouTube videos definitely got me thinking that this was the sharpener to get. His youtube tutorials and insight helped me decide on the WE over other systems. Again, first time user and can't wait to use it.

- It's definitely a great system. It will take around 10 blades or so to break in the stones, but it will be much quicker to sharpen knives after that... assuming you don't reprofile everything like I did. :D
