Wicked Edge

- It's definitely a great system. It will take around 10 blades or so to break in the stones, but it will be much quicker to sharpen knives after that... assuming you don't reprofile everything like I did. :D

Thanks! I have read that the stones require a break in period until you start noticing a significant difference. I will most likely not be doing any reprofiling, just sharpening and touch ups. I also want to learn how to put a mirror edge, which I have never done before. My sharpening has only been limited to the Sharpmaker. I can't wait to get it and start practicing on my older, cheaper, and less than stellar knives.

With the Sharpmaker, I rounded a few tips over the course of owning it. I just could never get the tips of my knives incredibly sharp compared to the rest of the knife on the Sharpmaker. I found myself sharpening most of the blade first....then sharpening just the tip, a two step process. Rounding the tip of my knives is probably my biggest fear when sharpening. I hope I don't run into this problem a whole lot on the Wicked Edge.

In this video I go through how to prevent rounding the tip w/ the Wicked Edge... it can happen pretty easily if you aren't careful! I am sure you will love it!

Josh, thank you. Just what I need. Bookmarked your video. I may be contacting you for more tips as I go along! Cheers!

Can you folks tell me the size of knives that the WE system can handle? Will it handle small pocket knives and also my bigger choppers & cleavers? Just curious about the versatility of the system? I'd really like to maybe purchase the Pro Pack II.

Happy to help any time I can! You can also give me a call if you wish.

yeah it can do pretty much anything... Here is some info on the smaller knives. I have one of these Tormek clamps and just sharpened a SAK this morning... works great and I can get to at least 15 dps even on very tiny blades. I have also sharpened my Junglas and Gerber Parang on it w/ no issues at all (never had to re-clamp or anything).

- Do you know where in the video you talk about preventing the rounding of tips?

I am an excellent freehand sharpener. I have also tried every sharpening system known to Man.
Nothing comes close to the WE for precision and simplicity.
I now use for every knife in my House!

I can't review the video at work... I'll try to do it later. But if I recall correctly it is where I am actually sharpening the knife. Just make sure you don't allow your stones to "wrap" around the tip and you should be good!

Where are the wicked edge systems available in Canada or do we have to have them shipped from the States? Need someting and this seems to be the best I have seem so far.
Thanks
Steve

Great suggestion from razor-edge-knives.

For my small knives, I was considering the WE Low Angle Adapter but the cost for entry is $75 + shipping. It is machined out of two small aluminum piece + fasteners, wasn't justifiable for me.

On the other hand, what was recommended by razor-edge-knives is a little bit more complex in engineering and cost less than half:

This thread has been an interesting read, how does the WE do with tanto blades? I have 2 tantos and a few other tradition blades.

I just got a wicked edge too! How reliable are the angle measurments of the arms? When Sharpening a full flat grind knife like a spyderco manix that has a factory 20 deg per side, can I just mount it with foam mounting tape and set the arms to 20 degrees and start sharpening? Or should I use my angle cube and just go with the measurement it reads rather than going with and relying on the sharpening system's meausurments on the arms?

Hey! To answer your question about your first question... the markings on the base rod are designed to calculate what degree you're sharpening at when your edge is 5/8" off of the top of your vise. Anything above or below that will affect it and the markings will be incorrect. This is why it is so important to get an Angle Cube or Angle Gauge. It helps in many different ways!

Secondly, I would not recommend using foam for FFG knives. I would use these following techniques on FFG knives:

The angle cube reading would be have the correct measurements so I would go w/ those readings. The reason why the right side is measuring more sometimes is because the left side of the vise jaw is fixed whereas the right side is floating and gets pushed out.

Hope this helps!

It works perfect... sometimes I have to re-adjust in the clamp, sometimes I can just leave it as positioned. Either way it makes a needle sharp tip and a perfectly crisp transition!
