I'm looking for wide rubber bands that can be used around a kydex sheath for storing items under them. I've bought bicycle inner tubes and cut them but I was hoping to find a source for rubber bands. Any help would be appreciated.

can't help you on proper rubbery bands, except to say that if you can get a hold of the rubber bands that they use in the post offices in australia, you will have some good rubber. i have been posted some things from teh land down under, and i always got one or two good old fashioned red rubber bands, like the rubber they used to make inner tubes from.

if you are looking for larger capacity rubber bands, i suggest finding a motorcycle shop and asking for the old inner tubes. these are great for making big brutish ranger bands from...and i am thinking up a design to use them for floats on a small boat...

Hey Scott Brigadequartermaster and Ron Hood sells them.

I found they split/crack after being in the cold or sunlight for a while.

dont know if this helps but at www.performbetter.com you can order thera-band bands, 6 yards long by 6 inches wide with varying strengths. not exactly a rubber band but you might be able to utilize it.

Thanks Tom, I'll check it out. Bear, Ron doesn't have them on his website anymore. I'm thinking the inner tubes may be the strongest for what I have in mind but I want to check any other options.

Scott, by their very nature, the rubber will degrade. Those silicon wirstbands work really well if its size matched your need. Plus, you can get custom ones with Gossman knives printed on them. Just google silicon bands. How's it going BTW?

The rubberbands that come on fresh Brochili work great.

I was going to say the exact same thing!
Whenever we get broccoli I scarf the rubber bands post-haste.
If they ever do degrade, I couldn't say how long it takes because I have had some for at least three years with no signs of deteriorating. I keep them wrapped around stuff in my gear bag so they are handy.

Doing great Marcelo. I will check that out. Thanks. I know about the broccoli bands from working in a food store. I don't think the produce manager would appreciate me swiping the bands off the broccoli. :D

BTW there is a velcro [hook and loop] that has hooks on one side and loops on the other. Very good for wrapping various things .Available in various widths.I have some 1" and 2" wide strips.

I agree with the use of brocolli bands. IN fact - I would go to an old school grocery that has a produce department and ask for some. I used to work in a grocery and they had a bunch of different sizes. They would likey give you some or sell them to you cheap.

i like the rubber bands that come on produce.. they work very well... i also usually just chop up my old bike tubes...

Rubber doesn't age well, and UV light generally doesn't help.

One good thing about rubber is that it burns well even after having been submersed in water. Make sure your replacement can do that.

And yes, you can get rubber from old bike tubes, so why bother?

I carry some of the fat ones that the post office uses. They are really strong and stand up to quite a bit of use before they wear out. I snagged them from our mailroom at work :)

I have used Ranger bands on my pelican cases for a couple of years. They still look new.
