Hey guys, just wondering where is a good place to find 1.5" - 2" wide scales of antler? (please note forum rules in regards to vendors, only those which are bladeforums savvy) can be elk or any species really as the core won't affect what I have in mind but I've been looking all over and can't find the big stuff and when I can its being sold as a "dog chew" for a 5" long roll thats over priced!!! If any of the smiths have a piece they could sell they can message or email me but has the shed and scale market for knife makers dried up so people can pay $50 for an XL piece to give to their dog? This seems like a new thing, I don't ever recall giving any of my dogs a piece of antler to chomp on.

I think Moscow Hide and Fur is somewhere in your neck of the woods, you might want to give their site a look. They don't sell scales, but maybe they can get you closer to what you need.

Im not sure why you cant find antler that wide. Are you talking about 2" wide tines? If you are making scales, cut a riser in half and use it that way, thats what I do.

I've not seen any 'good' stag scales over 1.5" wide and I've been messin with this stuff for over 30 years.

Did you look on ebay?

But antler dog chews? $50?

I've never seen canine marks on an antler.

Found a set today in at 1.5" wide x 5" long for under $10 shipped, wasn't after fancy knarled or popcorned stag but more flat piece preferably aged a little which is what I got...and yeah at petco and all over ebay is elk antler being sold as dog chews and it ranges from $17 to $50 for a round (the XL pieces are 1.5" to 2" and 4-5" long). But I looked at several vendors i've gone to in the past and 1-1/4 max was all i could find.

Hopefully this winter/spring i'll find some decent elk sheds on the game trails...the shed hunters up here are hoarders!
