I shot this shot clip this week. One of my guys found a great place to sleep inthe rocks with the added bonus of a perfect widowmaker right above it.

For those who don't speak Portuguese, I'm saying...

"Valcione found an excellent place to sleep, but look here above it...

This is a widowmaker.

You have to get rid of everything like this before you sleep. Everything that is going to fall..."

The other video shows Renato's shelter in a high wind. He had used contractor bags to extend his shelter and one of them got shredded. He stayed dry as the rock wall took the force of the wind and the bivy took care of the spray. The poncho held up fine but the contractor bags reached their limit.

great video.. those widowmakers sure are scary... :(

i've worked a number of high ropes courses over the years... before each program, we had to thuroughly look the whole course over for any widowmakers... if there was any, we had to do our best to get it down, more often than not, that meant we had to climb the tree....:D
 
So far aside from a few cuts, scrapes, and bruises I haven't had anyone injured out there yet and I aim to keep it that way. That rock was a perfect deadfall waiting to happen. Valcione said he hadn't noticed it until I pointed it out. Thanks for looking.

I have alot to learn. My camera has that little video feature and now that I upgraded recently to a 1 gig memory card from a 256 I can start to use it. I know I could get a 2 gig card, but I'm about 4 years behind the technological forefront due to the simple economics of it all (I B PO') Mac
 
I guess since I live in an area where big natural rocks are kinda rare, I've never heard the term "widowmaker" refer to anything other than trees/dead limbs, etc.

If there's something big just waiting to fall, but it's difficult to actually get to it to knock it down, a gun might come in handy. :) We've knocked big dead limbs out of trees that way.
