I called W/R dept today asking about the life sharp deal, all I wanted was to have them refresh the serrations on 1 of my AFCKs M-2HSS combo edge.
I was informed they didn't sharpen their serrated blades?
This was unusual, because all my other communications with them have been perfect.
Is it the norm that factory knife companies don't sharpen serrations?
I am sending the knife in and for a mere 45 bucks they are putting a new M-2 blade in for me, which I think is reasonable.
Not really as much a gripe as a question guys? Ron

This is from the Benchmade Website

LIFESHARP SERVICE
There's never a dull moment with a Benchmade... That's right! We will gladly resharpen your Benchmade knife to a factory razor sharp edge (service does not apply to any serrated portion of the blade). If you prefer us to sharpen your blade, or if you may have neglected to maintain your edge for a while, simply ship your knife to us. We'll not only sharpen it, but we will also inspect the knife for any warranted repairs and "tune" the knife for optimum performance. Simply ship the knife to the Benchmade address, postage paid and insured. please enclose your return shipping address with $5.00 to cover handling and return shipping charges.

I always thought it was strange, but it's one of the reason I stay away from serrations.

I would think that it may have something to do with the fact that serations improperly used or cared for can be mangled beyond a resharpening job.

45 bucks for a new M2 blade, not bad a deal.

I don't think any company sharpens their serrations short of maybe Chris Reeve or other custom makers.

My guess is that it takes too long and would be a definite loss for the company. Not to mention you would need a more skilled worker to do serrations so it would even compound the costs more.

$45 for an M2 blade is definitely a bargain.

You didn't order more serrations did you ;)

Spyderco wil resharpen anything, including serrations. This is another reason I stay away from BM....................

Sheesh! Maybe I should go into business sharpening serrations!? It's not all that hard.

Yeah, finicky little persnickety frgmblblbl ... ouch !!!

Just buy yourself asharpmaker and save that money you'd be spending on shipping.

What else do you stay away from?

It never ceases to amaze me when a BM topic comes up some Spyderco nut has to come in bashing Benchmade. If Spyderco does sharpen serrations they'd be the only ones who do, and oh yeah - they don't do it for free - plain or serrated.

And people say Sebenza fans are rabid...

Just to let everyone know, I was far from bashing B/Ms I now own 28 different models and want more!
I guess it was more of a question than a gripe.
Angie explained that they were cut on a wheel, and couldn't be sharpened at the factory.
To the contrary, Angie has sent me dozens of free screws, clips, standoffs, and damn near anything else I've ever asked for.
The new M-2 blade is a bargain at that price, but I just spent 2 hrs on my 204 slowly bringing them back to factory angle now they work and look great.
I was just plannning on being lazy and taking advantage of the free lifesharp plan, I add that this would have been the 1st time I've ever considered sending in a knife for sharpening as I'm very capable of doing it myself (that damn M-2 is some tough stuff) .
True Spyderco does it, and I love my Spydies also, and Mike is a great guy to deal with in W/R there.
Thanks for the replies and I wasn't trying to hurt B/Ms rep at all, I do and will continue to buy from them as well as Spyderco, EKI, MOD, Microtech, and any other that catches my eye. Ron

Spyderco can do an amazing job of regrinding and sharpening serrations. I have sent a couple of 'well used' (really beaten up) knive to them, and they all came be with serrated edges that easily shaved.

I apologize, I guess that did come off as bashing, that wasn't my intention. I have just handled quite a few of both, and in general, I prefer the feel of the Spydies better and the personal involvement of company staff with the general public/users.

As for sharpening serrations, Spyderco will sharpen any of their knives at no charge, you just have to pay for shipping to and from the factory.

Yeah, I am a Spydie nut..............but I’m more a knife knut that prefers Spydies.

(Between you and me the 710 and the Benchmite have caught my eye on occasion)

I almost bought a Benchmade once, until I found out about that lifesharp not counting the serrated portion of the blade. I found that very odd. Benchmade does make some nice knives, but they just don't appeal to me. Now Spyders on the other hand....

JFYI, Spyderco will sharpen PlainEdged, full SpyderEdged, and Combo-Edged knives with the only charge being the $5 return shipping/handling fee....no matter how many knives you send back to have resharpened.

BTW, I'm glad that you were able to resolve your situation, Ron.
