Wife Knife

My wife wants a folding knife to carry around, partly because a knife is generally a good thing, and partly for protection. I am trying to pick a nice locking folder.

Problem: she lives in another country while we work on immigration issues, so it's not like I will be around to sharpen her knife all the time. I was thinking there might be a company that makes good folders AND a simple, reasonably effective sharpener that works quickly and is designed to go well with their factory edges.

Any suggestions? I'm thinking 3-4", micarta or G10, and some kind of stainless that has nice edge retention and toughness without being a real pain to sharpen.

She also wants a stun gun, but I don't think the TSA wants that in my luggage.

What is your budget for the knife + sharpener?

Is pepper spray or mace legal where she is at? They can shoot 10 feet and gives some distance between the attacker and your wife. A pepper spray/mace can be found for $10+.

I hate to say it but if you want a fool proof sharpener that won't break the bank and maintain a *decent* edge, you might need to resort to a pull through sharpener. Not ideal but probably good enough for what she will be doing.

I'll hold off on recommendations until I know a budget.

I don't care if I have to spend a couple of hundred dollars. She is not likely to become a collector.

A pull-through sharpener might be best. I don't know one from another, though.

I don't know if she can have spray. I will ask. She should be able to get a shotgun for her house. It's not like she lives in Australia or some similar Orwellian state.

run picks ya come up with by her first before buying. helps if you like the pick too in case she doesn't. that way if it becomes yours, ya like it. in the end let her decide what she wants though.

I don't think she could stab with a Matriarch. Looks nasty, though. I will read up on the Spyderedge, whatever it is. I'm assuming it's a foolproof sharpener.

My wife thinks the Mini Barrage by Benchmade is one of the best gifts that I ever got her. She loves the assisted opening and it always brings a smile to her face.

Spyderco Dragonfly 2 Salt
With serrated SpyderEdge

It won’t rust and she will likely be able to go a year without needing to sharpen it, depending on use of course.

The Dragonfly looks pretty good. Never heard of K390 before. There's a new steel every week.

Maybe I should get her an Accu-Sharp. She's not going to be entering any sharpening contests.

Do you think a Manix 2 would work with a pull-through sharpener? I would feel funny using one, but the wife has never sharpened anything.

What's your budget? Gotta give us a budget.

Cheap: CJRB knives, Civivi knives, Rat 2 D2...
Mid: S35VN Elementum, Para 3, deka, bugout, etc
High: Olamic Whippersnapper, Hinderer halftrack, small sebenza, etc.

I find the Manix 2 to be a healthy handful. I could be a bit big for some women's hands or pockets. You might also consider a Delica which come in various colors.

How about the Mini-Bugout? (Or even the full-sized one?) Even with the s30v steel: sharpening is a breeze!

If you live in an auto-friendly state, knife center has this one:

Benchmade Mini-Reflex II AUTO 3.17" 154CM Satin Plain Blade, Aluminum Handles - 2551

That could work. Maybe?

Yes, it will work, get the pull through with ceramic sticks. The metal ones will pull metal off the blade.
