Wife Knife

Buy her two of the same knife. If one gets dull when you're not around she can use the other one. If you're not going to be there for a while she can mail you the dull one...

Not an exciting answer, but so far all of the women in my life who have wanted a knife suggestion and tried out a few of mine have all chosen the good ol' Griptilian. My eldest daughter got a mini-grip as her first (other than SAK of course), and still carries it.

I also echo the comment about pepper spray when it comes to personal defense. When my youngest, who walks around the area alot with her friends, first asked for a knife, our concern was that in a bad situation she may be entering a knife into an attack where it would not otherwise have been. She got pepper spray and a SAK.

That's a good idea, listing knives the women in your life uses:

Mom: Endura K390 (co owned 🙄), GEC DS Fruit Knife, wont list all the shuns she owns...
Work wife: Kershaw Scallion
Wife of my best friend: pink mini grip
On and off: Boker Mermaid
Drinking buddy: CJRB Small Feldspar D2
Lady who does finance: SAK Compact

Hope this helps.

Me: "Maybe you would like a knife?"

My wife: "Yeah, maybe."

Me: "Because it's a really good thing to have."

The wife: "Absolutely."

Me: "This thing is great, it's pink and has a butterfly on it and very practical with the lock and one hand open-bla-bla-bla...."

Wife: "It's so cute!"

Me: "Great! Settled! Um, are you sure?"

Wife: "Yeah."

That knife has been kept in pristine condition in a cupboard for more than ten years.

She will be in Zambia until we get her to the States. I also want to get her a gun, which is not a problem there. They won't let you buy much ammo, but she's not planning to be a range rat.

The knife arrived fast. Looks very nice. A little on the large side. I stropped it with diamond spray. I don't know if Spyderco's factory edges are trustworthy, but I'm sure it will be adequate for her.

How about a Manix 2 lightweight that is packing S110V under the hood?

I decided to try M390, thinking it might be less likely to chip. I like the heavier handle. I wondered why the handle on the wife's knife was riveted instead of screwed together. Now I see that's because it's a lightweight. I guess there is no way to disassemble her knife.

The color of the M390 knife could be nicer.

"... I also want to get her a gun, which is not a problem there...."
Great idea ! A mag of 7.62x39 holds 30 rounds, plenty for self defense and the gun loks more intimidating than any knife !
But the Manix you picked is a great choice too !

I don't think she could stab with a Matriarch. Looks nasty, though. I will read up on the Spyderedge, whatever it is. I'm assuming it's a foolproof sharpener.
The Matriarch was not designed to stab. Read up on it’s original development and use in South Africa. The blade shape is quite effective and a pulling motion was part of the design if I recall correctly.
