Wife Knife?

Kershaw Rainbow Chive (or Leek if something larger is desired). Possibly one of the least knife-looking knives made. A small SAK or Leatherman Squirt is also a good idea.سصيلبسيبلؤرلاتبقفلاصثفسيبلذ

WTF? All of a sudden I started typing in Arabic! Stupid school computers...

Anyway, I wouldn't worry too much about your wife scaring sheeple. Whereas a guy might be a dangerous escaped mental patient waving a knife around, people will hardly bat an eye at a woman with a knife.

For what you described I have to say the rainbow leek would be hard to pass up. It has the assistred opening you mentioned, is small enough and does not look frghtening. It is a verry beautiful knife and I suspect she will apprecieate the asthetics of it over some of the other suggestions. The leek has a much prettier look than a FRN handle by anyone.

I got my lady a BM mini Griptilian, Purple. She never thought that she needed a knife till she got that one from me. She loves the color Purple and that helped make it attractive to her. Now that she has it, she uses it all of the time and loves it.

My wife was never much into carrying a knife, until after I bought my first Spyderco SS Cricket PE. To my surprise, she took it away from me and now carries it everyday.....which just gave me a reason to buy another one. :D

You really get alot of cutting power in this small Spydie with a stout Chris Reeve style integral linerlock, strong SS scales and awesome VG10 steel. IMO, you/she won't be disappointed with this one. ;)

I'd stay-away from the assist-openers for your wife, as it's pretty easy to have the thumb follow the blade onto the cutting edge...OUCH!

Keep in mind that those concerns don't apply to assisted-openers with flippers. Knives like the Chive, Boa, Dominator, and Aftermath open neatly and safely with your thumb on the other side of the grip from the edge. :)

My lovely wife is a nurse and found that the tiny SAK I gave her as a love token during our courtship had a tool ideal for snapping open morphine vials! For the patients, not her own use! Had an up hill struggle to help her defend herself but finally have found stuff she likes!
1 Tiny SAK- prolly the mini champ?
2 Spyderco Cricket? For some arcane reason she loves this little ripper!
3 Inova X1 Great light for checking on patients or blinding would be muggers! So glad she'll carry it!

She always thought I was overstating the danger until a nurse in Ear Nose and Throat was walked to the car park by a scalpel wielding patient!Security did sweet FA and the nurse herself had to throw an elbow to gain space to leg it!After that my honey started to listen to my stories and carry some of the gear I thought suited her and her calling!
I hope she never has to use those toys to save herself but I hope more that if she does, that I have given her the tools to prevail!

How about a Imperial Schrade? I got a IS pal for my mom (still 15, still living at home) and she seems to be very happy with the knife. Less than 2" of blade, no pointy point, and very sheeple friendly. My parents, who are definitely very scared of knives, were not in the least put off by it. And I got it for under 11$ too. My mum doesn't put it through any hard use, but I got the same model for one of my friends (in exchange for a bike he gave me) and he's put it through quite a bit of abuse, and it holds its edge well.

My wife really likes the Sypercard I got for her. She carries it with her in her wallet so it's always around.

Most of the women I know, including my wife, are big fans of Spyderco. Just about anything they make is likely to be a hit. And, of course, they're all solid, well-designed, and well-made knives.

My other recommendation would be Kershaw's Rainbow Chive. Who doesn't love the Chive? It's a neat little design that provides a lot of functionality, but mostly it's just plain cute. :)

Tim Wegner Mouse (My girlfriend doesn't like knives, but she claimed my Mouse has her own when she saw it for the first time!)
Stainless steel spyderco cricket
Stainless steel spyderco jester

Of all of these, the Mouse would be my first choice but it is also the most expensive and a little harder to find. Therefore after this I would choose the SS cricket because it is functional but also looks "pretty" for the women. Lastly, the jester looks classy due to the SS, but it's so small that it would hardly ever cause the rise of an eyebrow.

That's true...It was one of those Kershaws that you open with the thumb-stud that I didn't care for...I think it was either a Whirlwind or a Blackout...My thumb wanted to follow the blade when the assist spring took-over and opened the blade.

Before I learned my lesson about buying my wife knives that she didn't ask for I'd bought her a Blackout for Christmas...she HATED it. I thought the assisted opening would be easy on her CTS (Carpal Tunnel) but the opposite was true. She was WAY far disappointed. It seems women are NOT always as confident with or impressed by assisted opening mechanisms as us menfolk. As for what my own wife likes and carries:

Benchmade Blue 940
Spyderco Shabaria
CRKT M-16 12 1* series
Benchmade Big Spender
Benchmade model 31 Balisong
standard Leatherman
Spyderco SS PE Delica

As to what yours might like....

Spyderco Dragonfly, Delica, Jester, Navigator, Chinese Lum

Benchmade Big Spender, or the Benchmite

Gerber LST

Kershaw Chive or Scallion

CRKT M-16 EDC (Spear point or Tanto)

SOG Blink

Maybe take a look at some of the traditional and slipjoint case knives with the purty handles.

Those are just a few suggestions off hand. (and all of them woman approved in my household) More than anything though I would suggest having her help pick it out herself though. It sucks to give up the element of surprise, but still worth it in the long run.

Another vote for the Victorinox Classic. This not only gives her a blade, but also scissors, nail file, small screwdriver, tooth pick, and tweezers. They can be had in several colors.

Paul

In case you didn't have enough suggestions :D --

Fallkniven U2

I will agree with the others on the Spyderco SS Cricket. My wife has carried hers ever since I got it for her. All of the other knives that everyone has suggested are great too!

My wife picked out the Victorinox Silver Alox Classic. She picked this out all by herself. I almost passed out in Target when she showed interest in getting a knife. She keeps it on her keychain. Just an idea.

My Wife carries a Boker Toplock 2 auto, and she uses it all the time. Paul

Lots of SpyderCo suggestions. I'm sure there are plenty of fans out there. I've never seen a SpyderCo that didn't look hideous in my eyes though. Something about the big hump where the thumb hole goes. Yuck :barf:
