The wife is the best...but a 9MM Sig freaks her out. She's asking for a 3-31/2" fixed blade to carry on her hip...something nasty and "persuasive" in close quarters...

Suggestions???????

You guys/ladies are the BEST...Mrs. Moose feels protected and looked after.
Thanks to all for your expertise.

I second the recommendation for a knife by Lynn Griffith. They are perfect for the size range you are looking for and the handles come in different colors

Not to mention their design is excellent.

Oh, this is going to be fun!
Prepare to do some reading HM.
Forumites love this kinda Q!
I'll start by saying the Fallkniven F-1 is worth a look. VG10 steel that rocks, gets sharper than a scalpel and stays that way for a good while too. A full height flat grind on the blade makes this knife a cutting glutton. Kraton handles that are just right for smaller hands, and I believe they are bringing them out now with a kydex sheath. Too cool!
Also check out the Nimravus Cub by Benchmade. It's got Tactical/Utility written all over it. ATS34 or M2 for the blade steel, kydex sheath, great ergonomics and a drop point "do all" blade profile that is one of my favorite small knives.
Lots of choices here, so I'll defer to others.

Those are great suggestions above, albeit pricey (and worth every cent, too). Another suggestion is a small Mora blade; Chaicutlery offers several, along with quite a few other makes from Norway and Finland. Nothing wrong with carrying a little letter opener, and if it just happens to be razor sharp, why, so much the safer... for the user. The little Troll blade is almost innocuous.

Get some Mace!

Get some training!

Don't start with a weapon, start with a mindset.

Yes indeed!
I nearly forgot the most important thing is training and mindset.DOAH!
Drew and Beth are right on the money here, and that is the best advice far and away!

You know, a 3-inch blade generally doesn't make the kind of impression that discourages an assailant. I've known some really good results from knives in the Crocodile Dundee ("now this here's a knife") range, but the smaller one has a much higher likelyhood of having to be used to be effective.

One small blade that immediately gets attention is a straight razor. Opened across your knuckles with the thumb holding the tab it makes a statement that says "real dangerous, and maybe crazy". Not a recommendation, just a thought.

Fallkniven, Moran.Dozier is cool too.
Maybe the La Griffe or TOPS Wolf Cub.
If you can find it the Palm A Hawk.

Are you sure a 9mm Sig wouldn't be better protection? No matter what self-defense weapon she chooses, she's going to have to be able to wield it effectivly. My greatest concern in carrying a knife is that if I ever need to draw it, I won't be skilled enough to ward off an attacker.
A gun on the otherhand has more authority. When she takes it out, and knows how to use it properly, I feel she'd have higher odds of walking away unharmed.

Just my two cents.

~Mitch

P.S. Whatever you BOTH decide she should carry, please make sure that she knows how to use it. I'd really hate for her self-defense weapon to be turned on her.

I would have to suggest the Rob Simonich Cetan. They are custom knives and Rob is a first class gentleman & knifemaker.

All the knives in the world go round and round, round and round, round and round...DAMN, one of them took my wallet !!! :)

If an opportunistic predator observes that a woman has any sort of sheath knife on her belt, wouldn't he be likely to look for a more likely victim in some other time and place?

May I suggest the Mini Max by Bud Nealy? The blade's a tad shorter than three inches, but it's curved, and extremely sharp. I got my wife one when she used to work as a waitress during the night shift. She would pin it underneath her apron, with the knife hanging upside down. The great thing is Bud supplies the knife with a variety of carry options!

My wife's Mini Max has ivory white micarta handles, and comes with a matching Kydex sheath. It's the ultimate chick knife!

Well, after the proper training and mindset, I want to propose the NEW Spyderco Moran. It's a bit longer than 3 inches, but IMO still a comfortable carry package. Without the cliplock you have a very nice slipsheath that goes virtually anywhere. Ergonomics are great and, well, Fred Perrin does more justice to describing the Moran than I could, so: http://www.geocities.com/Hollywood/Set/2292/moranrev.htm

Is Mr. Moose looking for a production knife or a custom knife for Mrs. Moose?

For production, Moran and Nimaravus Cub are in the 3.5" range, both with kydex sheaths. The Falkniven WMI is slightly under 3" but has nice comfortable secure handle. THe WMI currently has a swinging leather sheath but is supposedly getting a kydex update (according to some recent threads.) If Mrs. Moose wants "tactical" -- read "intimidating" -- I think the Cub is it. The Moran and WMI doesn't look as "tactical" (which is a plus in my book).

With custom knives, Mrs. Moose has lots of good options if Mr. Moose has time and $...

This is the fun part -- finding that knife and sheath that are "just right...."

First, try a titanium Smith ot Taurus in .38 (lighter and more reliable than the SIG-no flames please , I own a 229).

If it must be edged, look seriously at these makers before deciding:

Nealy
Dozier
Chavar
Boyer

All make 3+", sharp, thin knives with excellent carry systems, with Nealy and Dozier being two of the very best. As with any weapon, once it is displayed, one MUST be prepared to use it, mentally and physically.
