Wife needs a 3-3+" fixed blade for protection...any ideas?

I know this isn't a fixed blade but what about a Spyderco Civilian? I know if I wanted someones purse and saw that piece of steel coming at me I would forget that purse awful fast. Wicked shaped blade that would make it very easy to take a wild slash and run. Spyderco hole makes opening almost as quick as a fixed blade draw.

I didn't bother to read most of the replies, because I believe before recommending a knife, I think I should ask whether or not your wife knows how to defend herself with a knife. If she doesn't, and she takes one out on an attacker, there is a good chance it's going to be used on her. Now you've only compounded the problem. I read Cordurouy's post. He hit the nail on the head. If she wants something to defend herself with, I think pepper spray would work great. You can get it in unsuspicious looking items and it requires almost no skill. Plus, it's NOT potentially lethal.

Like I mentioned before, the skill to use a knife in an emergency situation is a must or the results could be less than favorable.
In response to Cordurouy's and epigram79's posts, I have to say this:
Pepper spray or any other aerosol type defensive item are by no means foolproof. In fact, they can lead to a false sense of security. For one, the effectiveness of the spray is of course based on the accuracy of the stream or mist. Wind can blow the stuff right back in your face, or deflect enough to where you're not getting the full effect, which will pi** your attacker off even more.
Another potential problem is the temperature. If it is very cold, the mist or stream will not be the same as in "normal" weather, as the particles can actually freeze before they hit their target.
Jet another thing to remember is, that those sprays are not good indefinitely. With time, they go bad. I'm not sure what the life expectancy of a can of pepper spray is, but I knoiw the Sheriff Department swaps them out every so often, used or not.
The thing I hate the worst about those sprays is, that unlike say a fire extinguisher, there is no little gauge to tell you if it is still charged or how full it is. Since you don't want to spray it just for the heck of it (considering there is very little in those keychain type containers to begin with), you're always in for a surprise when you do need it. You might press the button and nothing happens. Basically, you have to trust the thing blind. With a knife you know it's there, you know it's sharp. With a gun, well, at least you know it's loaded. It could still misfire, but you have anywhere from 2 to 10 rounds, which are not all going to be bad (unless you accidentally loaded the gun with blanks..not a good idea).
So once again, it comes down to the skill and confidence level of your spouse. If it were my wife, I'd suggest a wheelgun. No safety, no complicated chambering, just point and click. (Come to think of it, it better do more than click, more like point and BANG!!!)
If you still can't bring yourself to any decision, there are always tasers or stun guns.

It is vastly more difficult to mount an effective defense with a knife than it is with a gun, especially for a person smaller and weaker than their attacker(s). Training and mindset are very important, so whatever the weapon, teach her to use it properly. If it has to be a knife, go with a Livesay Woo or Little Pecker. The Woo is a pure weapon and the LP is also a very useful utility blade as well. Their price also makes them disposeable.

i vote for training and then an emerson commander on the rightside backed up by a spyde merlin on the left.

speed draw knife and a great back up if her right arm is grabbed.

above all though, make sure she understands and can accept the consept of opening up another human being. it is easier to shoot someone than to close with them, see their eyes as you slice the inside of their arm, or plunge the blade into their stomach and jiggle it.

if she cant handle that then she does NOT want a knife. it will eb taken and used against her. she may get a piece of the guy but thats all.
if she understands that it will be bloody and close, then see my choices above.

For sheer intimidation purposes, something like a REKAT hobbit, or pocket hobbit has it's advantages. Once there's some training under her belt, perhaps the escalator, which has the advantage of being used as a non-lethal weapon. If there's a little more money to be spent, http://www.hawgknives.com has some nice offerings.
