Wife thinks my flipper is too small

You can get pepper spray about as small as a knife, and I think that would serve her better.

Someone could take the knife away from her, and use it on her, and the kids.

Pepper spray in an enclosed area with little kids who likely have very sensitive eyes and very powerful lungs? That sounds like a good way to get a bus full of screaming kids desperately scratching at their eyes. I personally wouldn't even think of using pepper spray anywhere near a bus.

1) Taser is not a firearm.
2) start from Espada XL, and look for one that fit her taste.
3) Check the local laws about school zone, some have limited to 3"

I don't even know how to reply to this.

Well, why in the heck did you ???

Pepper spray can be used at a greater distance, and can be kept in the purse, or on a key chain if they would let her. Most will flea if sprayed.

If someone did get close enough to her, and was able to take it away, the worse they could do would be to spray them. With a knife she would have to get close, and it could be taken away by a stronger quicker person, and they could do much more harm with a knife than with Pepper spray.

She can't carry a gun. What would you advice ?
I would love to hear it.

Well, pepper spray sucks, so there's that.

Nothing wrong with a good knife, a little training, and the mindset to use it.

You could have said that in your first post instead of "I don't even know how to reply to this"

We'll just have to agree to disagree.

Oh, custom DDR.. well the blade looks like it met a slack belt and got beat down... my mistake, I'm not versed in HTM vs DDR.

And as far as this post goes... A woman with a knife and a mindset to use it vs. a pissed off drugged up large man, is a huge accident waiting to happen. The paranoia is interesting though! Carry a means of instant communication, a panic button.. trying to fend off someone typically doesn't go well, especially if its a woman vs man, small vs large... person with morals vs person who visits prison monthly...

Pepper spray is usually a bad idea. In a panic situation you need to make sure its pointed the correct direction and can reach them.. Then you need to make sure there isn't any wind, or deflection.. AND the person you hit might not get nailed hard enough to stop them from charging you anyway.

A taser is about the best answer, but if you miss, you (being a female bus driver) better have a real good back up plan...'

Life happens, can't prepare for everything and paranoia only gets you so far. Real circumstances are far different from cyber discussions logic...........

I agree.

Ok, and how long will it take for someone to respond to some "panic button"?

Taser and pepper spray are both off limits. A knife, while not my first choice, is simply the only resort, and is a last resort. Better than nothing,... grab at a blade and see if you get a better grip than the person on the handle end.

It's not unheard of for knives to be used for self defense, there are even models of such knives, and forums about such use. So it is possible.

Yes they can be used for self defense, but I'd at least recommend taking some sort of class. Then get what they recommend, or a knife with a lot of reach. The farther away you are from the person the better.

Yojimbo 2 maybe a good one or something with "Wave"
The key is you need something big enough to make a statement.

About year and a half ago,
I was working on a photo project in the morning and two young men tried to mug me,
one tried to punch me in face and the other pulled me on the ground.
I do have a mindset to use a knife but still took me a second to understand what was happening.
Luckily I did pulled out my Cold Steel Spartan, they ran and I had not draw any blood yet.

While I normally don't recommend a knife as an ideal means of self defense, the one time where it can be an effective tool is in the hands of a determined woman with the will and ability to use it. Knives are excellent offensive weapons when used against an unarmed or unsuspecting foe.

In most situations a private citizen can never use a deadly weapon unless first facing the threat of death or serious bodily injury. Which means, for men, you have to be facing a gun, knife or club, because it is assumed (rightly or not) that men can stand and fight if their assailant is also unarmed.

However, when there is a significant disparity between the assailant and the victim (20 year old versus 80 year old victim, or three attackers versus one victim, or a physically stronger man versus a weaker woman), deadly force may be considered justified even if the assailant is not visibly armed. Whether or not it seems fair, women are much more likely to be able to justify using or displaying deadly weapons against an unarmed opponent due to the physical disparity. Obviously this wouldn't apply in some cases, but in general it would be a believable justification in the event of an actual attack.

Couple that with the fact that the prospect of getting stabbed will deter those who think they have an easy target, and I argue that a knife is a viable defense weapon for a woman under the right circumstances, more so than for most men in a civilian self defense situation.

Buy her one of these:

As with anything, check your local laws! Get caught carrying a baton, club, or anything that can be similarly categorized in Texas and you will find yourself up that creek which shall remain nameless! I am local LEO and we cannot pack our ASPs around off duty! But we can carry as many firearms, knives, tasers, etc. as we can carry. Go figure!

Oh, and as for the small flipper, my wife says it's "how you use it that counts". God, I hope she's speaking of my knife! lol

DD

Get her a pair of these, wear them on black shoes/boots.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned this yet....... instead of having her carry a small knife on her why not leave a tire iron, metal pipe, or crow bar under (or near) her seat? It normally won't be perceived as a weapon but when needed, any of those items will be a much better weapon than a knife.

PS - Tell your wife that your flipper isn't too small, the problem is that her sheath is too big.
