In this thread, there's a pretty good discussion of torx wrenches and Wiha.

Here's my question: There's a set of six Wiha wrenches that I'm considering, but on the Wiha site they are listed as Manufactured in Germany ($32.81) and on Amazon, the same set is listed as Country of Origin: China ($26.10 + No Shipping Fee). What's going on?

Thanks. :)

Wiha's website lists production facilities in Germany, Switzerland, Poland, and Vietnam:

And there are some fakes sold on Amazon even if they won't admit it. I try to steer clear of China made products when possible. Have nothing against the people just the manufacturing.

Very often Amazon listing information is poor, but if you want to ensure you're getting a genuine product, purchase from a reputable retailer rather than an Amazon vendor.

i called wiha before, chatty engineers . me knows geman . and chinglish . and no, i am not china . but my engrish is as poor . haha . so lemme call them for ya 07722-959-0 asap (Friday evening closed).

Thanks, K. Very nice of you to offer.

The sku # is 36291. The item is the SoftFinish® Torx® Screwdriver 6 Piece Set T6-T15. Seems like a good set.

Don't forget to ask them for a tip on some good German beer.

Yeah, Wiha China, one of the unlicensed versions. Amazon doesn't care.

Also, I have heard that Amazon creates the listing information and you play hell, before giving up, trying to get them to correct it.

The big issue is that Amazon uses MANY vendors for each SKU and so counterfeiters often sneak their product into Amazon's warehouses because no one checks that stuff, so depending on who actually fills the order from which warehouse can be a roll of the dice on if you really get the product it's supposed to be or not.

Like so many quality products, when something gets a good reputation and a following, there will be copy cats and sometimes that original company will contract out their name in order to capture more of the market for those that dont want to spend that kind of money on a bit driver.

Do yourself a favor and get the real german Wiha bits and a good driver. As someone who has gone through quite a few bits in the past of less quality you will save yourself headaches and money in the future by going with the quality bits from the start.

On second thought I don't want to be dragging others into this conversation so I have edited them out.

And after further thought let's just say I too am not a fan of Amazon and their practices.

I was saying that a major issue with counterfeits is the way that Amazon structures their listings, so even in cases where authentic items are listed, it's possible for counterfeits to enter the system under the legitimate listing. And you're correct that they really don't care as long as they're making money. It's one of the reasons a lot of companies specifically have "No Amazon Sales" as part of their dealer agreements these days. It makes it almost impossible for companies to ensure that their customers are getting the legitimate product.

I debated this in my mind and decided to go with the wrench set instead of the bits-and-driver idea.

On the subject of headaches and money, there is nothing I like more than to spend money on the best, including the best tools. The only reason that I posted above was to be sure that I'm getting the real German Wiha goods.

I'm getting the real German Wiha goods.
office is closed, I'll speak to them HQ on Monday no big deal .
so far not looking good, i caht find your exact sizes set or sku on the geman wiha website (wiha.de) nor on any reputable geman tool seller website like svh24.de, only the bigger Torx sizes. from this, i would bet my hat that your sku be legit but made in the china, and that wiha is gonna tell me exactly that on de monday .

What I gave you is off the wihatools.com site. I didn't link it because I didn't want to violate any forum rules.

I'm in the U.S. (that's a little west of Düsseldorf).

Great discussion, thank you.
After years of use,,,, I finally messed up my T6 Wiha bit,,,,, went on Amazon to order a new 6pc set, T5-T10.
The description stated "made in Vietnam" other items by Wiha said "made in China".
Went to Wiha USA factory site and ordered the set of Torx bits,,,, same price as Amazon but
Made in Germany. It could be a typo on Amazon but why risk poor quality knock off?

Regards,
FK
