I decided to make a trip down here while the wife was using her gift cards! :D

This is in SE Ohio, near Corning and just north of Burr Oak State Park. This is located in a section of Wayne National Forest where you are allowed to make open fires - bonus!

Apparently, the locals shoot signs! :jerkit:

This was my first time here and my time was a little limited so I just hiked in for about 1/2 an hour and then made a fire. The big loop of this trail is 15 miles long! It was a really cool place and I didn't see or hear anyone else all day! The main trail was marked nicely too!

I gotta admit, my firesteel and tender gathering skills really stunk today, so I used my backup:

I have read several of you guys making tea and figured, why not try it?.....I am hooked! It sure does taste even better out in the chilly woods!

I love days like this, nice fire, some hot tea (add milk, right pitdog?) and the peace of the woods. Priceless.

A properly put out fire:

A great day out and a really nice place to get away from it all!! I can't wait to go back and go in deeper into the woods, maybe do the full 15 miles sometime.

Looks like a great day. We had some beautiful weather today for Ohio - cool but sunny.

I'll have to try that one sometime - I'm a bit north of there, maybe 1 to 1.5 hours.

What did you take in your pack?

Probably too much stuff! :D
I had a couple of emergency ponchos, a space blanket, some para cord, an oil candle and then I have a mini PSK made into a sandwich sized Lock and Lock with all sorts of fire stuff, water pills, a handkerchief, extra glasses, extra matches, a spyderco and a Micra. Then I threw in an LED Mini Mag Lite and some contact solution and my saw. My first aid kit is strapped to the back, and I brought my brand new Guyot Nalgene but didn't really use it. The Camelbak had 3L of water. I was really just trying some stuff out and seeing what I could take and use.

gotta love ohio  its one if the three states that ive lived in, down in the river valley though, my allergies go nuts.

Great pics and what a place to visit and hike in. Loved the fire Pics:D
I am sucker for fire pictures LOL and knives to and hatchets.
Thanks for sharing them pic.

I love the Wildcat trail. Did you get to the old oil/gas camp? The buildings are pretty dilapidated, but cool.
There is a sweet set of camping spots just after the dam turn in (headed south). Go to the next turn (to the boat launch), and take the first right. Camping is $5.00 a night.

Nice pictures. Looks very peaceful there with the leaves just carpeting the forest floor like that. I also always get a kick of out seeing a $10 knife in a $30 sheath. Not that there is anything wrong with that, it is just that a great sheath makes a good knife really shine! I agree - nothing like hot food in the cold woods :)

Thanks man! I was drooling to make a fire on the way down! Does that make me a pyro? :D
I was imagining another knife that will be in my photos at the end of January! ;)

No I didn't get that far, but will keep that in mind.....thanks! Is that in Burr Oak?

Thanks! The leaves underneath were real wet from the recent rains, so it was real quiet too. It made finding dry wood a little tougher though. I actually made that sheath, so it didn't cost me that much! It is sort of overkill. :D

I live in Ohio, and it is some beautiful property down there. It is where I go hunting for deer.

Glad you had a good time :)

There are some great campsites for free along the trail - one on thick pine duff that's good even in the Mud Season(s). No "facilities" except nature. Great place for owls in the spring. Beaver lodge in a pond along the trail.

That's close to my old stomping grounds, but I hadn't heard of Wildcat Hollow. I went to school in Nelsonville and Athens, been to Burr Oak and used to visit a gravel pit in Corning. Lots of great "outdoors" out there.

Glad you had a good day, and thanks for sharing. :)

Thanks everyone!

Thanks! It was new to me too! There's a PDF file of the topo map of the trail.

Nice pics. I use the same saw. Love it!

Thanks! Yeah, for $9.99 it surprised the heck out of me........very capable and solid!
