Wilderness .22lr

.22LR, small game, back packable...well, a Ruger MK I or II w/4" barrel and you'd be golden.

IF hunting day trips were your primary objective lot of great .22 options, mostly rifles..in the woods, going up and down hills long guns can be a PIA...I'd rather have more trail mix.

I love my 1022(bottom of pic), but for a simple short backpacker I picked up this cheap Norinco copy of the CZ. I don't think you can get them without a bunch of ATF papers in the USA :(
It has been rock solid and can us 10rd CZ mags, so you can also check the longer barrel version, it is the JW15 I think.

Goog luck with your hunt

Another vote for a Ruger, but I would suggest the Single-Six. I like the versatility of .22LR and 22 Mag. New retail may be more than your budget but used ones should be in line.

I am going to mention one which no one else has, that being the Savage #24. This little .22 over a 410 bore or 20 gauge breaks down to a max of 24 inches to pack, is more accurate than most shooters, and you have the ability to use either the .22 lr or the shotgun barrel. Again, I do not know if these are still in production, but if not, should be fairly inexpensive at local gun shops or pawn shop. I have a grand total of 6 of these so far, with all different rifle or pistol calibers. Have found them to be an ideal woods gun, and if had to limit myself to only one gun, that would be one of those.

I like and recommend my savage 24C 22/20ga

I thought it was just the military surplus rifles, as I found quite a few reviews on the JW15 from USA. Must have been pre-ban

Might be, a guy I used to silhouette shoot with had one. Right now the only Chinese guns that are imported here are nonNorinco shotguns like Hawk or that Winchester trench gun clone.
