  • Today marks the 24th anniversary of 9/11. I pray that this nation does not forget the loss of lives from this horrible event. Yesterday conservative commentator Charlie Kirk was murdered, and I worry about what is to come. Please love one another and your family in these trying times - Spark

Wilderness and Cheese

I like mine with a nice chunk of good jerky, venison is especially nice.

block of cheese on a hike? HECK YA!!!!! good stuff, esp with hot pepperoni, salami, dried chorizo etc et

I like cheese crackers and jerky myself.

The cheese doesn't last long, the wife and I love cheese.

I carry peanut butter as well, dense nutrition and it keeps itself from being eaten too quickly (all at once at least)

Always some sort of cheese. I usually go for an aged cheddar (they're dryer cheeses, I feel that this might add to it's longevity), but once it gets to this time of year, you don't have to worry about your food spoiling, you have to worry about it freezing.

Trader Joe's has all sorts of great cheeses that I love to bring with me, and cheap too. I really like their New Zealand Grass Fed Cheddar, their English Shipping Cheddar and their Dubliner.

I also like to take some sort of sausage, and either crackers or flatbread naan (also trader joe's).

Some cheese and sausage with some bread and an apple makes an excellent lunch. Maybe a beer to go along with it (If I packed any), it really doesnt get better than that, and you get to use your blade to break it down.

That mug is amazing! Where'd it come from?

Thanks. The arctic birch burl "Kuksa" (cup or mug) was hand carved in Finland and given to me as a gift. I use the Kuksa constantly and can't imagine owning a Scandinavian knife without one. :D My Kuksa holds one cup...just perfect.

Some information on the Kuksa.

The Kuksa is a special drinking cup of hunters and Laplanders in Finland. The kuksa is a hand carved drinking cup made from birch burl. Laplanders have a personal Kuksa that stays with them throughout their lifetime and has been used by Laplanders for as long as anyone can remember. They use it for everything they drink; coffee, tea, vodka and water from the stream. The cup will not hold any flavors from previous drinks

Kuksas are made of carefully selected arctic birch burl and uniquely treated with salt and/ or coffee. This makes them durable and long lasting while light enough to carry in a backpack or on a belt. The Kuksa is made from renewable materials and so it is a true nature product. The leather straps on these Kuksas are reindeer leather.

A Kuksa is more than a drinking cup, it's a lifelong companion.

Kuksa do not require any special care. A quick rinse after use is all that it needs.

I believe that Kellam Knives still sells the Kuksa. Scandinavian Treasures usually has a few on ebay. And Cloudberry Market will occasionally have them. You get what you pay for with the Kuksa so you need to be careful if shopping some place like ebay. :)

Hard salami or summer sausage and an extra extra sharp cheddar.
+1

Add some tortillas as a base and it makes a great filling for folded pizza

With regards to cheese lasting, it's really only the exposed cheese that stands a chance of going moldy. When it does, I'll shave the moldy bits off and keep eating the rest :D

Kind regards
Mick

Thanks for the info on that! I really want one now... :D

And that pizza is making me seriously HONGRY. Flour tortillas or wraps are another staple of mine.

EDIT: Anyone know where to get a big chunk of arctic birch burl? I think it would be pretty cool to carve my own.

Funny thing about this, I have an old industrial plastic mug (like you see in mess halls and government cafeterias) that I've carried around like that for years. Problem is, it holds 5 ounces. I may have to find me a kuksa.....
