wilderness food...

All this talk about snares has got me thinking of the bazillion bunny tracks in the snow in my yard....

Rabbits are suckers for old fashioned box traps. They are quite easy to make from scrap lumber, and very effective. When properly set in a good population area, ten boxes could easily yield five rabbits in a day's time.

all depends on what you consider gross, eating half cooked bird embryos with cow lactated fat, ground seeds mixed with rendered tallow and fruit oil and covered with boiled tree sap may sound odd, but that is what sunny side eggs, with butter, pancakes and maple syrup is.

worst thing i have ever eaten emotions wise, were prairie oyster and giant pacific Northwest clams.

prairie oyster for usually reason, and the clams, well, they outgrow the shells and live in the sand, and the appearance is ahh more than than slightly reminiscent of the human male's most intimate anatomy. You find them by tapping the ground and watching for the neck or siphon to "piss" a little streamer in the air when walking on the beach at low tide. When you find them, you reach into the sand and grab the siphon and pull, while digging around it with the other hand. As it was described to me, when I asked what I was feeling around in the sand for, 'ever have morning wood? well this is someone elses morning wood" and that is the truth.

http://www.tonywhite.net/and-Cheers.jpg you get the idea why they are better eaten before you see what they were...

if you eat them first and get to like them, then eating them is not bad, if you grab one first then find out what the taste like, you may not want to do that again

i just must ask the Q what do they taste like????????? and how do you cook them??? there is a korean market not too far from where i work and i seen some of them up for sale. Yes im willing to try them if they do taste good.
A friend of my traveled the world in the 60's and 70's. He eat things i dont even know the name for. He traveled in africa for over a year he said that he had food that was made with people spit. Always carry some salt and paper with you. Even the native would love to borrow some for the flavor. If you can actually eat it or not is all in your head. I know he had dogs monkeys snakes all kinds of birds and lizards, rats, mice animals he showed me pics of but none of us ever seen anything like that so we got no idea whats the name.

And dont forget to look for poop, if theres food and poop, their aroud there somewhere ;)

I've heard that if you find green Rabbit Poop, they've just left the area as their digestive system doesn't get it done the first time so they'll actually turn around and give it another go if it's got enough green in it.
My Dad told me one time he took a handful to school and gave them to a kid telling him they were smart pills. Figure the kid needed em if he'd fall for that. :D

Mesquite pods and I think the beans are edible.. keep finding different info. http://www.desertusa.com/mag99/oct/papr/oct99_lil.html
Google around.

Also, the pads of prickly pear cactus, and apparently the fruit as well, are edible. Supposedly the pads taste like green beans (you remove needles, boil, and skin them, and eat the fleshy inside).

I want to try both these foods as they're quite common in my general area.

I have tried prickly pear cactus and its very tasty, they have sweet delicate flavor of their own, all you have to do is remove the skin and spines. Watch out for the very small spines though, if you get them in your mouth its bad times.

those are geoduck clams, they are actually quite tasty eaten raw and sometimes served in Chinese/Japanese restaurants. They have a mild sweet flavor and they are great with some spicy soy sauce or wasabi and soysauce

Another point is that game is likely more healthy than the farmed meat we get that's full of drugs, hormones, insecticides and whatnot. How about ROADKILL as a food source for the hard pressed? Believe I've heard of a roadkill recipe cookery-book. Seagull anybody?
