The WMA is offering a week long 0800-1700 1st responder certification for right under $600 for students. I'm thinking of taking it but being on a tight budget I was wondering what others thought about the WMA or if they've had any experience with it. By the way, what is a 1st responder? I'm assuming EMT's are first responders right? Thanks

First responder can and does mean many things. Some call all cops, firefighters, and EMTs first responders, because they are the first ones on scene. Therefore any class taught to them would be a first responder class. Also in NYS we have a medical level of training called first responder, which is a level below EMT.So I would call them to find out just what this is.My guess would be that you would be taught what you would need to know if you were the first one on scene of a wilderness emergency.

I beleive that those titles and designations come from the federal Dept. of Transportation, therefore, you're probably looking at a certification at a level below EMT. It's still valuable training. Another concern you may not be aware of, there are recertification requirements which may also be costly.

Just went to their web site and I'm quite impressed. They do offer EMT certification but that isn't offered at my school. They seem very professional and have even given training to the FBI and DEA. Recertification is every 3 years at a cost of about $25. Full recert is recommended every 6 years. Looking forward to the training. Semper Fi.

Cesar, around here you can take a first responder or emt class at the local community college for $300.Also if given the choice go with emt.
