wilderness related careers

You might consider a job in land surveying. I'm a surveryor and I spend a lot of time in the woods. It all depends on the type of surveying company you work for. You can typically find an entry level surveying job with little to no experience and work your way up as you get experience and education.

Really? The reaso I say that is b/c I lived in Tomball my whole life. Never saw any such jobs around...

Yea, if you go to the parks and wildlife website, they have listings for all open positions. There are about 6 right now within an hours drive of me.

Most of them are for Ranger 1, which pays about 10 bucks an hour. I would need at least Ranger 3, which is an impossible position to get right out of the gate and requires a BA in a related field.

I'm toast.

I worked a game keeper after i left school, then got a job with the forestry com. as a chainsaw operator and tree planter (I had to do a short course for my chainsaw certificate). I then got a degree (a bit of a waste of time really) and started my own business felling trees and doing Arboriculture using the contacts and friends I had made previously.

Nothing beats working in the woods even when the weather is crap, your tired, cold and fedup you know you would never be anywhere else. :p

Getting a Ranger job might not be as hard as you think. It actually might be easy for you. I got jobs that required a degree because I had "experience in the field".

You have been in the military right? Well applicants get a "veterans preference" which is 5 or 10 points added to a scale of 1 to 100. So basically if you score 100 and then add 5 or 10 points you bump all the civilians with the same score. Even if you score a 90 or 95 you can bump people with a 100 based on your vet status. It is much easier for a veteran to get a Federal job than a civilian.

Each job will have a KSA list, knowledge, skills and abilities. Usually this is just a questionnaire that is multiple choice. Sometimes you have to write a summary that explains your experience. The evaluation is often based on keywords. You need to have the keywords in your KSA to get the points needed. Sometimes if you have an insider you can find out what the keywords are. Some examples might be, customer service, computers, management, etc.

I know a lot of people that have got bumped from jobs they scored 100 points on the evaluation due to a vet with the same score applying for the job.

Maybe not. I got a GS3 position because I had a years experience in the field with no degree. After a season at GS3 I got a GS4 position the next year.
