I would like to get everyone’s opinion of what makes a good Wilderness Survival Course (please) – from a students point of view

A friend of mine and I have been trying to organize all of the material that we have and put everything that is in our heads down on paper and into a well thought out course

Basically – what would you want, expect and what subjects would you want included from a high quality Wilderness Survival Course that you have spent your hard earned money on?

Thanks in advance for your help

1) psychology of survival -the mental steps and potential mental windfalls that a person in a survival situation might face
2)basic kit building - ingredients used to make a good psk and how to utilize those materials to the best of your ability
3) FIRE, FIRE, FIRE
4) Shelter- building
5)navigation
6) signaling for rescue
7)1st aid
8) Water procurement
9)Food wild edibles fishing and traps
10) Physical preparedness -basic iguidleines for remaining healthy and in good shape as parto of everyday life so that your body will be prepared to handle the rigors of a survial sit. after all a sharp mind and body are everybit as important as a sharp knife
11)tool maintenace _instrucion in the proper maintenace of edged tools

SOme thoughts from someone who teaches it.

Nail down a philosophy and stick to it. Is it primitive skills/bushcraft or modern survival. Trying to be too many things will dilute the experience.

Are you trying to educate them on surivival or giving them what THEY want? The 2 dont match many times.

Are you insured? If not youd better think about it as you need it as the potential for injury is high.

Do you know anything about adult education? One can be very knowledgable on a subject and haven't a clue how to teach it.

Is it 100% outdoors or mixed, facilities, cost etc...?

Will you have the safety issues covered? Is someone a "wilderness" first aider at least. Wilderness MFR preferred for liability reasons. It does make a diference in court as street first aid doesn't cut it.

Do you have all the safety gear you need?

Do you have the qualifications to back up your company and teaching methods if challenged in court?

The content you will figure out and tweek but its all the other issues which bite you in the ass. Got that t-shirt.

Had a 50 yr old women break her lower arm in 2 places when she fell over a log, everyone else simply stepped over it. She tried to sue saying the terrain was not safe for training. It was just run of the mill woods nothing special or dangerous.

The fact it was a public course, my long background in SAR, the waiver she signed, witnesses and the superb medical care (by yours truly) ;) she got on scene got it thrown out of court.

I wouldnt want to be joe blow running a course with no background, medical expertise or professional credentials or affiliation in the subject, but thats me.

The bush may seem like a calm safe place but it isn't and Murphy will show up sooner or later.

That is a cryin' shame, you offer to teach the skills needed to save your A in the wild, get someone to stupid to walk off pavement and she thinks YOU owe her for her own stupidity. Those are the people that should be eaten by coyotes (they don't deserve wolves) when they go outdoors.

To be fare to her some, I shouldnt have let her on the course to begin with. She was a city type, 50ish and very overweight. I never made that mistake again.

Yes, its a shame how some people take advantage of a privilaged situation.

Got a course at the end of the month, should be fun and no bugs:thumbup:
