I was taking care of some stuff at home today, when I heard my neighbor let out a glass shattering scream. I run out the back to see whats up, and she is standing in the grass frozen. I walk over and find that she is standing amongst a couple dozen garter snakes, Women.......

After calming her down I went and grabbed a bag and started collecting them. I was only able to catch about 8, so I figured I'd move them some place they wouldn't get into trouble.

Here are a bunch of pics.

This lil fella, had no problem with me, but kept trying to bite the camera.

I was contemplating keeping these 2, they didn't want to leave.

No, I didn't eat them.....

A couple dozen? No wonder she screamed! That is cool though, and very neighborly of you to move them for her :)

Yeah, atleast 20:eek: I found a decent sized hole in the ground, so I am thinking they all came up from hibernating or something.

I live in a townhome, so all the houses are connected. Her backyard is pretty much my backyard;)

bet she has bad dreams for the next few weeks. Or maybe a few fantasies about the man who "saved" her.

I used to find Garter snakes in my basement every spring. Lucky for my wife, I think I found the opening, and it shouldn't happen any more. If that meeting ever happened, I think they both would pee.

over the winter, garters get in group dens of probably up to 100 snakes in order to keep themselves warm. maybe it was one of those dens letting out for the spring.

holy crap! fabulous endeavor tony!!!!

So there is a pheromone that the female will let out after mating, making all the males leave her. A new phenomenon is the tiny males are able to make that sent, leaving the lady all for themselves.

How do you think I got my wife.......

Glad you found them Bro, too many people would have just killed them. They ended up being pretty lucky snakes.

Most of the wildlife relocation I've done involved moving large game animials from the field to my freezer. Nice job on the serpents though! (I don't think I'd put them in my freezer:)

Yeah, thats what I thought this'd be. My relative says he only "relocates" animals to heaven.

good photos, Tony.

Garter snakes bite if you pick them up like that where I live. Maybe its the just coming out of their den that makes them so docile.
Cool pics!

A couple dozen? Wow, the most i have seen at once was 4. Must've scared her half to death. Well, you are her hero. I wonder ... nevermind :D
