Will a Carbonfiber Caly 3 ZDP serrated edge ever be made?

I might of missed the bus, but I haven't heard a thing. I just really want a SE zdp Caly3.

Please, tell me yes. :D

Two issues with that ever happeneing. One is that for collectors, serrated knives don't sell as well as plain. Second, Sal has stated many times that the Caly model appeals more to the knife aficionados(collectors) than the general public. For a serrated ZDP Caly 3 to happen, there would need to be a big enough market desire for one to make it worth Spyderco's effort. I don't see that happening when the primary market for the ZDP Caly 3s was the collector crowd. The users that wanted ZDP went for the cheaper alternatives in the FRN Caly Jr and/or the Delica/Endura.

I'm not against the idea, I just don't think it'll happen.

I can tell you why, $$. While the caly is a nice blade, I don't want something that expensive to use. I have my mini manix for "heavy duty" (reads abuse), for light duty stuff at home, I'll just use my FRNs for that.

Scott was referring to the Calypso Jr, not the Caly 3. Back when the FRN Calypso Jr. first came out it was about the same price as the Delica, so cost was not really a factor. It was also available in both PE and SE, so preferred edge type availability was not the determining factor either. Regular users just seem to prefer knives with hollow or saber grinds and no choil.

My guess would be, if the PE CF/ZDP Caly 3 sells well and the SE G10/VG10 sells well, then a SE CF/ZDP Caly 3 might materialize. Otherwise, it won't.

One other observation. I wonder if laminated ZDP-189 used on the Caly 3 would be suitable for use with a serrated edge. Not sure if the asymmetrical grind used on SE knives and the centered core of the "ZDP-189/420J2 sandwich" would play well together. IIRC, the only SE ZDP-189 blades so far are solid ZDP-189.

I believe that is a very real reason.

Delica vs. Caly? - Caly anyday!!! , but not the recent black FRN Caly ZDP run. that was a nightmare - I bought and sold two because of the dreaded wobble.:barf:

Caly 3 and Caly 3 ZPD rock however! ;)

After I made this thread I started to wondered the same thing
