Second, Sal has stated many times that the Caly model appeals more to the knife aficionados(collectors) than the general public.
Why's that?
Scott was referring to the Calypso Jr, not the Caly 3. Back when the FRN Calypso Jr. first came out it was about the same price as the Delica, so cost was not really a factor. It was also available in both PE and SE, so preferred edge type availability was not the determining factor either. Regular users just seem to prefer knives with hollow or saber grinds and no choil.I can tell you why, $$. While the caly is a nice blade, I don't want something that expensive to use. I have my mini manix for "heavy duty" (reads abuse), for light duty stuff at home, I'll just use my FRNs for that.
My guess would be, if the PE CF/ZDP Caly 3 sells well and the SE G10/VG10 sells well, then a SE CF/ZDP Caly 3 might materialize. Otherwise, it won't.
One other observation. I wonder if laminated ZDP-189 used on the Caly 3 would be suitable for use with a serrated edge. Not sure if the asymmetrical grind used on SE knives and the centered core of the "ZDP-189/420J2 sandwich" would play well together. IIRC, the only SE ZDP-189 blades so far are solid ZDP-189.
