Will a GEC Whittler Rust in the Rain

I tested the backspring on my GEC 73 with cold blue, and it is most definitely carbon steel. It is slowly acquiring its own patina, as is the backspring on my GEC toothpick.

GEC certainly have carbon backsprings, never seen stainless go grey yet.

I actually like the CASE approach of stainless springs and carbon blade, the inside of a knife and its springs can corrode very unpleasantly....

My father's Schrade trapper has stainless blades, but heavily patinaed backsprings. They almost look blued.

A carbon steel knife will probably do a lot better than you think. I found one of my grandfather's or uncle's fixed blades in the dirt outside their garage. As far as I know, it had been there for many years, and this was Arkansas, so it had seen some rain.

It looked like heck, but it cleaned up alright. The steel is pitted, and the washers on the handle didn't do so well, but it is still theoretically usable. If I can take some decent camera phone pictures, I'll post them.
