Will a KMG run in reverse (and track properly)?

I'm wondering if a KMG-type grinder can run the belt in reverse and track properly.

I read one post that said the tracking wheel must be 'close' to the drive wheel in order for the tracking to work correctly. I'm currently building a franken-grinder, and I may want the belt to run 'backwards' for some applications.

thanks

I don't see why not. My much cheaper Kalamazoo 2x48 grinder does with no problems at all. Its just a matter of switching the wires around on it but I never remember how until I need to do it. I have not done it on my KMG or needed to but I have my Kalamazoo running backwards now in fact and its been that way for quite a while. Its hard to explain but I like laying that one so the arm is sticking out overhanging off my work table and it runs so its sparking down when in reverse for this configuration whereas if I left it running the way it was when it shipped it would be sparking up at me as I grind. Access to the wheel is unlimited the way I have it now and I use it for contouring handles since the wheel size is one I don't have with my KMG.

By contrast if I were to turn that Kalamazoo upright to flat grind using the flat platten it would be running backwards with the belt running up and sparking up too. If that helps you picture it.

Some of the more electrical tech. guys have put a toggle of some sort on grinders to just flip belt direction at their whim. I tend to not need that and would not know where to mount such a thing if I did.

i just got a jumper from rob to make it run in reverse, and it works good . i use mine to sharpen blades ,. i only run it at about 1/2 speed

I put a 3 position switch beside the pot for my VFD and I have stop, forward and reverse. It seems to work fine in reverse. I just never use it that way.

For the KMG, you could also get it to run in reverse by mounting the motor on the opposite side of the pulley, right?

I can't figure it out, what kind of "jumper from rob" are you talking about??

Is it an electrical switch ( 3 positions: forward, stop and reverse ), or....what?

And, who is "rob"? (Rob Frink, of Beaumont Metal Works?)

All of the variable speed KMG's come with a reverse switch now as far as I can tell. I asked Rob if mine could be retrofitted and he said that all I would need to do is install the switch and change a couple of wires around. There is already a hole for it on my controller.

Mine has the reversing switch, but I can't seem to get it to track just right in reverse.

Maybe there is something that I'm missing.

Farki,
Dobar Don... I was in Virovitica with IFOR.

Yes, Rob is Rob Frink.

Dobar dan, Will!

I'm so glad to see that someone actually knows where is the country I'm coming from, but I wish you had much better & merrier reason for visiting my country those times.

I hope you'll come here again, and spend at least one week or two of your holidays on our Adriatic coast?

Thank you for your answer!

I thought so but had to ask, just to be sure.
Everything is cleared now, thanks!!
