This will be my first Buck knife purchase. I called Scheel's today, and they said they have hundreds of the 110. They are all in the clamshell packs. Is there anything I should look for when buying this knife? I cannot take them out of the packaging, since they are in those clamshell packs, but I can see them all from the outside. Any desirable characteristics that can be spotted from the outside?

They all come from the same place and should have the same tolerances, (IMHO)
Without opening them up and handling them, I can only think that you would have a wood grain preference? But that will only get you so far as you cant see the backside of the handle. When I have purchased the standard models I just grab one ;)
Good luck, enjoy it!
Oh and welcome to the Buck forums!!
Stay awhile!

Sometimes those clammies can be old new stock. In other words older year models that have been hanging for a while.

Look on the back of the clammie in the barcode area for a date. No telling what you could find. Maybe even an Idaho. If they have hundreds, I am betting that there could be a variety of years.

You can also see what sheath you are getting. I once found a brown leather one with the curved bottom.

Just make sure that they have a good return policy (one of the reasons that I like Wal-Mart).
After you buy it, take it out to your car and open the package for a careful inspection.
If you find anything you don't like, take it right back inside and exchange it.

Good luck,
Allen

How is the quality of the nylon sheath they sell at Wal Mart? One of the reasons I was going to go to Scheel's to get it, is they come with a leather sheath instead. But if the quality of the nylon sheath is high, I will consider it. What is the general consensus of this sheath?

I prefer the nylon sheath, you can carry it horizontal, barely even feel it then ;)
Also the nylon sheath washes up alot easier and nicer (IMHO)

While I generally like leather, I prefer the cordura sheath that's available from Buck for horizontal carry.

The basic nylon sheath is total crap in my opinion.
So if you can't get the cordura, then get the leather one.

Does Wal Mart sell the basic nylon sheath with their 110's or the cordura sheath?

And not all cordura are both horzontal/vertical sheaths, even tho they have same 426 stock number.

IMHO for dress to impress the leather looks great !
esp if you are in to tradition or not in a dirty work environment ..
However
for a for a nasty work, edc used at work or hunting knife
ya jest cant beat the nylon!
it can be washed unlike the leather if needed...
i speak from when i bought my first 110 in 67..

I think the basic nylon sheath is the one that came in the 110 commemerative tins a couple years ago, I havent seen the thin nylon since...

If there is no way to tell if the cordura sheath that Wal Mart sells is vertical/horizontal, or just vertical, I will get the leather sheath.

Decaffe, I had one leather sheath come in that was so nasty I tossed it in with a load of my jeans. didn't figure I could hurt it any worse. I was surprised that it came out ok. Just let it air dry tho, and rubbed it wit a little neetsfoot. Then saw the 110 stamp on top instead of bottom :D

Welcome, Candt! I'll echo what my learned colleagues mentioned above. Unless you can get a Cordura sheath, stick to leather. Personally, I like the leather sheaths, however they are not so hot for storage as they tend to tarnish the brass.

In any event, welcome to the world of Buck and enjoy your 110!

From what I have seen the standard nylon sheaths are vertical... there was a dual position carry sheath that came with one (or more) of the anniversary tins.

The issue I had with (only) one clam packs that I bought, one of the brass bolsters was marred from rubbing in the clammy. Since it was to become a "user" it didn't really bother me.

Enjoy!

You're dating yerself Dave ;) LOL

I think I bought my first about 1970 :)

If you can handle it before purchase, check that the blade is tight in the open position with no slop. Also, check that the blade is centered when closed. Also open it and look at the spine. The joint between the spine and the blade should be near seamless.

Something to think about also. You are going to spend right at $30 bucks for a 420hc 110 that unless you loose it will last you a lifetime, unless you have an OCD and sharpen it everyday :D.

Not knowing how old you are, but since it is your first, maybe you are young. So say if you are 30 and you use it till you are 70. Thats less than a buck a year.

Then what usually happens here is that we buy our first plain 110, and then get caught up in buying another one in some premium steel, or a custom shop.

So then one might cost you a buck fify to two bucks a year.

Just sayin,,,,maybe if you have a Cabellas or a Bass Pro, you might wanna jump straight on into a 110 with the better steel blades that will stay sharper for ya longer.

But nutin wrong with having more n one 110.....and you will....:D
Welcome to our addiction.

I purchased one this morning. There were quite a few on the rack, and they were all marked at 29.99, except one which was marked at 24.99. I asked the salesman about the price difference, and he said that they used to be on sale before Christmas, and this one was still marked as so. So, I got a 110 with the leather sheath for 24.99. Not too bad. What a knife!

The comment about the leather sheath causing accelerated tarnishing is quite true...Also, I know from experience that if you sweat into the leather sheath, the dye will bleed into any shirt or trousers it is in contact with... :(

I can't comment on contact with natural water (rain; thrown into lake; fall into bathtub), but I would expect that to cause bleeding, too...Dye bleeding, I mean... :D
