Will Double V Edge Void Warranty?

I have a Emerson Commander and while I like it the left-handed chisel edge isn't a preference of mine. Would it void the warranty if I put a conventional v-edge on it? Anyone send a knife into Emerson for repairs and they refuse because the cutting edge has been modified? Could I send it to Emerson and pay them to sharpen it with a v grind to keep my warranty since the "modification" would be done by the manufacturer?

I have been here and done this...yes...your warranty will be null and void. They will offer to replace the blade for $120 if you do it. I ended up trading mine for another knife after I had it done. Ask them to do it...they might still turn you down and offer a re-blade instead. (For $120)

I suppose I'll just stick with it then. I like this knife but because of this it isn't going to be my normal edc. I'll still keep it and use it. Just wish this large blade wasn't limited with a chisel grind on the wrong side. Oh well. I have a lot of different knife options.

It's not limited, a CQC7 is limited, because a lot of people don't like the chisel grind (the blade grind, not the cutting edge). I don't get how it's limited, I've carried and used Emerson knives for years and have yet to encounter something that I couldn't cut because of the way it's sharpened.

Same here. My mini-15 has done anything that My Gayle Bradley or Rift or ZT 350 would do. And... since it's a double V grind with a single sharpened bevel (like the Commanders), it's a really easy touch-up when I'm at work or out somewhere away from my regular sharpening kit. I keep a piece of a broken Sharpmaker fine rod in my desk at work. On the rare occasions when I use a knife in the warehouse enough to lose the edge, it's quick and easy to bring the Emerson back with that broken rod, since I only have to work on one side.

Not to start a war on which is the best edge - just playing devils advocate here. And I own many Emersons and carry one for EDC.

My question would be, why would sharpening my knife anyway I choose void the warrantee? It isn't changing anything on the knife except the way I sharpen my knife. And I'm guessing EKI has seen many awful sharpening jobs come in. It just seems odd that dismantling the knife doesn't void the warrantee, but sharpening does.

Keep in mind - just asking. I have no huge heartburn with the chisel edge, especially since I figured out I can get it sharp, but some of my Emersons I've sharpened to a V edge.

Dunno. :)

I'm new to Emerson so it takes some getting used too. The chisel edge doesn't bother me. It's that it's a left-handed chisel edge. For looks over function? I'll keep trying it.

I too find it odd that I can take the knife apart, reassemble it half assed, and slam it open 1000 times a day with the wave and not void the warranty. But heaven forbid I sharpen the other side of the edge. :(

Does a double v look like this?

If that's how you want to grind your knife..... Oh dear!

Double-V grind is Emerson's term for the Commander profile. From their website: "All of our knives feature a single edge grind regardless if they are a chisel grind style like our model, CQC-7 or a double V ground style like our Commander model."

To be honest...I was wary of Emerson and the chisel edges/chisel grinds for quite some time. As a work knife, they excel. For detail cutting, until you get used to the way the blade cuts, you'll be a bit off. Easy to touch up. Carrying a Horseman right now. I'm almost exclusively carry Emerson, Spyderco and Strider these days...and all three of those brands polarized me one way or another when I first got into this hobby. YMMV

Yes - I find this odd myself. Granted - EKI can set whatever "rules" they wish regarding their knives. It appears to me that they encourage owners to disassemble their knives by selling "pimped" parts, extra screws, etc., But if you keep your knife in one piece, add no fancy parts, but put a conventional V edge bevel on the blade edge using your Wicked Edge, it voids the warrantee. Just seems backwards to me. Does anyone know why Ernie feels this strongly about sharpening but is cool with dismantling? I own another knife - and they expressly state that disassembly will void the warranty. It comes with a convex edge on the blade, super sharp. But I'm doubting I will be able to duplicate it so it will likely end up with just a conventional V edge on it. I specifically asked about sharpening and was told they didn't care what method I use to sharpen it, short of obvious abuse of course. And they know if there has been abuse or not. They built the thing.

Dunno. Just my thoughts - for good or bad. It certainly won't prevent me from buying and enjoying Emerson knives.

Yeah I'm aware if the differences between a blade grind and a edge grind. The only Emersons that I know that are true chisel grinds is the CQC-7 series.

I can understand if you screw up your blade in the process that they won't cover it. I could maybe even see them refusing to do a resharpening service for it. But a flat out warranty void sounds extreme, especially since their warranty covers disassembling and dropping it off a building.

Anyone have any more insights on this? Try as I might, I just can't use get used to the left-hand chisel grind it just messes up my cutting. I absolutely love Emersons their designs and their philosophy of use but the chisel grind even with the conventional V grind on the CQC 15 doesn't perform well as other knives and I need my knives to cut. And please knowing take this as I am trying to start a flame war. It's the exact opposite actually I just ordered 2CQC 15's and I want to put a double bevel on one of them for a true V grind

Nt sure what you mean by insights. Sharpen it into a V = voided warranty. If you need specifics, only Emersonrep or an email to the company can tell you specifically why or if that has changed. Seems strange I agree, but some people think putting a 5 degree inclusive edge on a knife looks "badass" and in effect can ruin the blade.
