Will I like the XM?

Kwazy, your bil is fortunate to have those! That's two hunts I'd love to do.
There's an XM listed now with the ti scale, but I don't care for the wharnie blade. The spanto and slicer are both great looking, so I'll keep watching. Plus I need to sell a knife or two. Or a gun. Or maybe a kidney. ;)

Mike

Is the Blade Show a good place to buy an XM, or is it more just for looking?

Blade is done via lottery like all shows, it still provides a great opportunity though as they have many available knives and the priceless chance to meet the crew/fellow herd members.

I have carried autos or assisted knives for years, but recently bought a 0560 and now I'm addicted to flippers. I find myself perusing the exchange daily, lusting after an XM-18 or XM-24 (especially the 24). My question is for those who have made the jump from 0560 to XM; what do you like better about the XM? Is there anything that you don't like as well?
Thanks.

In my youth I carried several autos and assisted knives...all quality pieces. But over time they began to fail so I lost my fondness to them. More recently gave a pricy OTF weak-side back-up duty but it failed! Now, I carry only Hinderers on my person with a ZT collaboration and a few Busse(kin) in my EDC bag(s) and such. Once something fails me I lose all confidence no matter any of the items attributes.

ZT collaborations are nice, in that they have qualities that best other knives. But along this same line of thought the Hinderers better the ZT collaborations. It's obvious the level of attention / detail given to items from the Ranch. Mass-produced items just don't seem to directly compare.

Shows provide awesome opportunity to meet the makers and a chance to win in a lottery for the opportunity to buy a Hinderer at MSRP. But factor in costs of attending shows and sometimes it's similar dollars to just buy from the Exchange/Authorized dealers, etc. I attended several (more than the total of fingers and thumbs on my hands) lotteries and had no joy for a long dry spell. So, luck plays a big factor in scoring at a show.

Will you like them? Only you will be able to decide.

What do I not like about them? That no matter how many I acquire, it never seems to be enough.

Sorry for all the nube questions, but how does the lottery work? Was thinking of going to Blade just to see lots of cool knives, so the possibility of scoring an XM would just be a bonus.

You go to the table I believe and "Put your name in the hat" and if you get picked, you can buy any of the available knives at table prices...Including customs if they have them available.

Thank you! I'll be booking my room asap. May even take my wife to double my chances. On second thought, probably not. I can hear it already: "HOW MUCH?" "FOR A KNIFE?"
We have a don't ask, don't tell policy on my toys and her clothes .

mmassey, I saw you pulled the trigger! Congrats! I think you made a good choice.
I did, with a little prompting from Ross. I was going to wait 'til I sold something, but you guys are a BAD influence. I can't believe I gave in to peer pressure so quickly!
Oh, and I still want a 24. ;)

Haha! We are all supporters of each other. As long as supporting means buying more hinderer gear;)

It got you too. I was going to wait until Blade and try and snag one but I found one for a decent price on the exchange, like yourself, and I pulled the trigger. Might still try my hand at Blade Show too. Congrats.

You will love the XM.

0560 Better flipping action. If you even look at it funny the blade comes flying out, XM-18 not so much. However the XM-18 build quality is much better and feels better in hand!!

I'd still like to go to Blade and try and score a 24. I know, I haven't even gotten my first and I'm already after another.

I had an epiphany last night: Rick Hinderer is a marketing genius, along with being a knife design genius. The ZT 0560 is a gateway drug that leads you down the path to the hardcore XMs, and I'm a junkie waiting on his first fix to arrive in the mail. Package ships today, and then I can start tracking it.

Yes, I believe crack has been sprinkled on these items that creates this uncontrollable addiction to Hinderers!! Haha!

Need! Want more Hinderers!!!

I was advised to buy the armorers tool, but it looks small. Is there a full size spanner available for it? I know I won't carry the little tool, and would MUCH rather have something easier to hold.
Thanks again for all the advice.

Its not as small as it looks. I have big hands and the tool is easy to hold and use. I got along just fine without one for a long time but now that I have one I wouldnt want to break down my XMs without it.

The Armorers tool is a well designed "all-in-one" that can be carried as a key chain or part of your gear load-out in a go-bag.
Has what you need in it for maintenance of your XM .... AND a Big design advantage is the ease of holding the spanner "in-place" flat against the knife both in one hand while you use the screw driver end with the other thus minimizing if not negating the possibility of a "slip and "scratch" while trying to fanagle three pieces otherwise.

and my answer to your thread question : Yes.
